Rightio... The big trip starts in three weeks (all through Asia) and Im madly trying to organise everything ive left till the last minute. Every time I organise something another ten things seem to pop  Ive got all my techno stuff sorted (phone, camera, Mp3) and I swear Im going to have to go naked the whole time cos all my rechargers are taking up all my pack space! Question is what converters do I need for all these countries? Im from the land of Oz and I know that the power sockets here are different to Asia. Im going to Thailand, India, Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos and I heard that all these places may have all different sockets :blink2:. Do I buy them here before I go or are they easy to get once Im there? Also was wondering what everyone does whilst recharging stuff? DO you just get a book, sit down next to the power socket and settle in for a couple of hours? Any help with this stuff would be great

It's usually easier to buy them before you go. Sometimes finding an electronics shop is difficult at your destinations, and sometimes the only place with the adapters are geared toward tourists, so like film, batteries, etc., they tend to overcharge. In the US, each adapter is $3-5, so I can't imagine they'd be much more in Oz. When you go to buy them, the packaging should say which regions they're good for...

As far as charging stuff goes, I've never had problems charging stuff in my hostel room - usually while I'm sleeping or reading, etc. But remember, you can also do it in the common room while watching TV, kitchen while eating breakfast, out at an internet cafe, etc.

If you have a travel store or luggage store near you, they often sell the power adapters, and you should be able to find a package containing a variety of different adapters which should cover all the plugs you're likely to meet. As omi said, they'll say which zones/regions/countries whatever they work in. Probably best to have them before you leave, just in case you have difficulty tracking them down when you arrive.

Also, I'd agree that recharging overnight would be the most efficient time, although you could also take along the charger while you're doing your laundry, or any time you want to take a longish break. I'm not a big advocate of spending hours in an internet cafe while on the road, so I don't think that would be my top choice. If you're nervous about leaving your gear out overnight, you could plug in while you're getting ready to go to sleep.
