Warukan Guest House, Kyoto Japan
I wanted to try a more traditional accomodation in Kyoto but found ryokans to be prohibitively expensive. Enter the Warukan Guest House. They are similar to a ryokan only with dormitory sleeping arrangements. You pay about 2500 yen or 20 bucks a night (16 Euros 10 GBP) for a mat and the ability to bump your head on everything if you are over 5'8. Not for people that want the truly authentic ryokans or who want western beds.
The security is a bit shoddy and it is a little removed from the center of town but I still recommend it. Good place for a 2-3 day stay.
