Cholesterol & I love eggs…
Okay, so – anyone who knows me knows I love food. Knows also that I’m NOT the type of person to count calories, monitor fat or limit carb intake. I just couldn’t live like that. HOWEVER! In the February issue of National Geographic, there was a great article on heart health. Reading it really got me worried about the amount of cholesterol I was consuming. I started to do a little research and what I found was very alarming. First of all, cholesterol is not the same as fat – in fact, there isn’t even a whole lot of correlation between the two of them.
Now, I love eggs. Any which way you make them. My typical breakfast through the work week is breakfast burritos. I make them at home by scrambling eggs with different veggies and occasionally ham & cheese or something. Of course I talk to my mom all the time and about everything and recently she called and said she was worried about how many eggs I was eating and practically begged me to try egg beaters. I said hell no, but I will try making my BB’s with one whole egg + one egg white instead of two whole eggs. I’ve already started this and I could never tell the difference. Good start.
Well today, just for the hell of it, I decided to look up the cholesterol content of one egg… 70% DAMN PERCENT OF YOUR RECOMMENDED DAILY INTAKE! God, this seems crazy! A stick of butter has LESS cholesterol than one large egg! WHAT?!!!
Anyway – by posting this I’m urging you all to consider the amount of cholesterol you consume. I’d rather die than lose fat and calories from my diet BUT I’m willing to do my best to move away from cholesterol. It’s so evil! Apparently cholesterol is ONLY found in foods of animal origin! Egg yolks and liver are the highest of them all. Avocados, which I so lovingly call green butter, full of delicious fat and calories = CHOLESTEROL FREE. Cashew nuts, olive oil, etc. All cholesterol free.
This is all news to me and I have to admit it’s gonna take a minute for me to get used to the idea of limiting my egg intake. I’m going to though, for sure. You should do the same.
