Ok so I am sitting here in Granada at the Oasis hostel and the front desk guy just came around and lit candles and incense around all the common areas...how cool is that?

I've had many niceties heaped upon me when arriving at hostels, if only because of my rock-star stature... Ok, maybe not because of that.
But the absolute nicest thing a hostel had done for me was when I arrived at Hôme Guest House in Barcelona. The lovely Irish gal at the desk offered to make me a cup of tea, and it was good tea, with milk and sugar... That's just the start of the fantastic service I received there, and I'll continue to give praise to this place.
After the tea, the best-front-desker-ever went around to actually introduce me to everyone who was hanging around the hostel that day. I'd come in dead tired and drunk from Amsterdam, and already I was mellowing out and meeting new people.
I asked about the arrival of another guest (since a bunch of us Punx were meeting up in Barca that day) and she told me that there was a big reservations snafu with HostelWorld, but they were already working on getting everyone new accommodations. I sat with her for a good while as I looked up various hostels in the city and she called them up one by one seeing if they had room for overbooked guests. Before I even moved my backpack upstairs to unpack, everyone had been accounted for. I've never seen a hostel handle an overbooking mess like this.
Naturally, since there was a meetup that night, I had to get on TPunk to figure out what's going on, who's meeting where, etc. The public internet terminals were out, but understanding my dilemma, I was allowed to use the staff computer as much as I needed until I had everything sorted out.
I've spent a lot of time hanging out with hostel staff at places all over, and by and large, everyone's been great, but that arrival at Home really sealed the place as having some of the best staff ever.

I stayed at mount Backpackers in Mt Maunganui, NZ when I was 18 and I had just run away from home. i was extremely scared, broke and confused. The dude who worked and lived there, Micheal "Mr Hawaii" was like a big brother to me, helping me find a job and getting me to go out that night instead of sitting in bed feeling scared and sorry for myself. it was the most awesome time of my life in the end, and partly due to Micheal being such a freindly, caring host . (oh, and also the beautiful scottish man I met there )

I was in ADam and walked from hostel to hostel looking for a place to stay, but everywhere was booked (this was about 5 yrs ago, before online hostel booking was popular).
Anyways, someone at a hostel recommended that I go down the street to this bar and talk to the bartender about room availability. I was like, okayyyy....
I went to the bar/restaurant and spoke to the lady behind the bar. Told her that I was having problems finding a place to stay.
Understanding my plight, she whips out a key from behind the bar, tells me the price for a private (soemthing cheap like $20-$30, can't really remember) and gives me directions on where to go.
Upstairs, above this bar/restaurant they had these private hostel rooms. It was the bomb, and probably the best kept hostel secret in ADam!
Anyways, going in and out of the hostel, I had to go through the restaurant where I would sit and chat with her.
She made my stay in ADam a very pleasant one, indeed. And it's people like that, that help make your trip to that city, all the more memorable and great .

Hmm, nothing really comes to mind. The hostel worker in Lagos let me use to washing machine for free, I think. He may have forgotten to charge me. Sometimes the best treatment is to simply leave you alone and not rip you off.

The nicest thing I had was in Berlin. I stayed at Bax Pax (only 12 euro per night, awesome place, NEXT to the U-bahn and great people). and our last night there we went on a pub crawl. We got VERY hammered from the free shots in between bars and long islands all around. We got back around 4am and passed out. We had to be out by 10am. We were very prepared to stow bags in the lockers and sleep it off in Zoo station. The front desk worker heard our plight and offered the couches in the common area. We happily agreed and passed out right there until around 3pm. We awoke to sandwiched on the table in front of us and she said "all yours!" We basically forced her to take a 20 euro tip for her hospitality.

I thought I would add something nice that happened to my sister while me 'n her were travelling.
We stayed at the Eurohostel in Glasgow, a good place close to alot of stuff, clean, but on the noisy side! Anyways with all the shopping and rushing around we did, she left her jeans in the room.
We were in London by the time she missed them.
When we got home to Canada a few days later she e-mailed them and asked if they had seen them. She gave her address and told them to tell her the cost of shipping them if they indeed did have them.
There was no reply.
But about a week later, her jeans showed up in the mail!!
That was a super nice thing.

I was staying in a hostel for the first time in Victoria, Canada and I was really excited! I left after a few days, and while I was on the boat home I realized I have forgotten my bank card and $20 in the room. I got a call one day asking for my address from the hostel.
A few days later I got all my stuff in the mail with a nice letter, asking me to come again. I thought that was such a classy thing to do.

I arrived in my pre-booked hostel in San Sebastian, Spain quite unwell. After a visit to the internet to find out what Varicella meant, I then realised my medical certificate said I had the Chicken Pox. Thankfully I had booked a single room.
The manager and her daughter went out and bought me food and drink, gave me English books to read (the insurance person told them I was to be confined to my room) and allowed me use of the cordless phone so the insurance people and my family could contact me as it was not clear when I was allowed to fly home in a few days.
I'd go back and see them again in a heartbeat.

I was looking for a place to stay there were no hostels in this small city, just people that put signs out that said Zimmer.. which means room i guess... No one had rooms available untill I found this one real small place.. The lady that owned it said she usually rents a few rooms out in the summer, but I could stay if I wanted. It was a private 2 bed room with all the necessities. She only charged me 20$ and brought me dinner when she made it for her family, then brought me breakfast in the morning. Then I asked her where I could go to rent a bike and she said the bike rentals are closed on sunday, but you can use mine if you want. So I took her bike and rode to the nearby castle.. Very nice lady, very good cook as well..

Me and a few friends went to Greece in May 06, and we went to an Island called Syros and a small place called Galissas. We planned to camp but the tourist season wasn't started yet and the place we went to camp at was shut, so we gave them a ring to try and find out where else we could stay (the town was deserted, seriously). The guy who owned the campsite (2 hearts camping) said we could stay there for free and if we needed any help to go down to the green dollar cafe bar. So we left our stuff in a hut and headed down. Turned out someone in this town was getting married and so the whole population (all 60 of them) had gone which explained the desertedness, however the guy in the bar welcomed us with open arms....and free beers!! We couldn't believe it!!! And to top it off, when we got back all the huts had been cleaned out and the guy wouldn't allow us to use our tents so we got, clean and comfortable huts with mattresses for the week, for free!! It was great!!

I arrived late at night in Gdansk, with an address but no reservation. When I got to the hostel it was packed with school groups, and the woman at the desk refused to give me a room. A man I'd met on the train had walked with me to the hostel to ensure my safety, and when he found out they were full, he called his wife to ask if I could stay there. She reluctantly agreed, but then the man talked to the hostel staff again and they even more reluctantly allowed me to take the last available bed in the hostel (it was a double room with a guy in it, and they didn't do mixed dorms). I guess it wasn't really the hostel doing something nice, but I was certainly grateful! The guy WAS a creep, though. Since it was my first hostel experience, after that I never had any trepidation!
A couple of years ago at Nathan's Villa Hostel in Prague (I loved that place), the owner's girlfriend insisted on doing our laundry herself - they offer free laundry anyway, but I thought I'd have to do it myself. I brought out a huge pile and two days later, clean, dry and neatly folded laundry appeared at the end of our beds. This may not seem like a big deal, but as the laundry doing/folding/putting away mom in our family, having someone else do the work was the height of luxury for me! I went up with them one day, and the two girls just giggled and cooed over the little baby clothes they were washing the whole time, so I guess everyone was happy.
