Exclamation Cholesterol & I love eggs…

Okay, so – anyone who knows me knows I love food. Knows also that I’m NOT the type of person to count calories, monitor fat or limit carb intake. I just couldn’t live like that. HOWEVER! In the February issue of National Geographic, there was a great article on heart health. Reading it really got me worried about the amount of cholesterol I was consuming. I started to do a little research and what I found was very alarming. First of all, cholesterol is not the same as fat – in fact, there isn’t even a whole lot of correlation between the two of them.

Now, I love eggs. Any which way you make them. My typical breakfast through the work week is breakfast burritos. I make them at home by scrambling eggs with different veggies and occasionally ham & cheese or something. Of course I talk to my mom all the time and about everything and recently she called and said she was worried about how many eggs I was eating and practically begged me to try egg beaters. I said hell no, but I will try making my BB’s with one whole egg + one egg white instead of two whole eggs. I’ve already started this and I could never tell the difference. Good start.

Well today, just for the hell of it, I decided to look up the cholesterol content of one egg… 70% DAMN PERCENT OF YOUR RECOMMENDED DAILY INTAKE! God, this seems crazy! A stick of butter has LESS cholesterol than one large egg! WHAT?!!!

Anyway – by posting this I’m urging you all to consider the amount of cholesterol you consume. I’d rather die than lose fat and calories from my diet BUT I’m willing to do my best to move away from cholesterol. It’s so evil! Apparently cholesterol is ONLY found in foods of animal origin! Egg yolks and liver are the highest of them all. Avocados, which I so lovingly call green butter, full of delicious fat and calories = CHOLESTEROL FREE. Cashew nuts, olive oil, etc. All cholesterol free.

This is all news to me and I have to admit it’s gonna take a minute for me to get used to the idea of limiting my egg intake. I’m going to though, for sure. You should do the same.

*curtsy*

Ahh, who on earth has just one egg?!? Unless it's hardboiled or something.

I ate egg whites for a while with spinach and feta. Then there was that e.coli thing, so I've been missing out on my iron. But no cholesterol in egg whites.

And the bf cooked me eggs for breakfast this morning! Delish!

But you also need to remember that the yolk of the egg is where all the nutrients are. An egg white is just a bunch of amino acids that you are consuming, no vitamins etc. We do need cholesterol, just not excessive amounts.

Anyone seen Sleeper, where Woody Allen runs the health food store and in the future everyone eats fatty foods because they found out that being healthy was the opposite of what we thought? I'm just waiting for somebody to discover that brown rice and whole wheat (things that took me a looong time to get used/addicted to) give you cancer or something.

Dr. Melik: [puzzling over list of items sold at Miles' old health-food store] ... wheat germ, organic honey and... tiger's milk.
Dr. Aragon: Oh, yes. Those are the charmed substances that some years ago were thought to contain life-preserving properties.
Dr. Melik: You mean there was no deep fat? No steak or cream pies or... hot fudge?
Dr. Aragon: [chuckling] Those were thought to be unhealthy... precisely the opposite of what we now know to be true.
Dr. Melik: Incredible!

Yeah seriously. I love eggs too, but I usually only have it once a week.

If you like tuna, you could try a tuna-avacado sandwich (just replace the mayo), which is good breakfast food, for me at least. Or is it weird that I eat sandwiches for breakfast?

It seems like every food casues cancer and is good for you at the same time. How can we win?

I think the best solution is balence. Eat whatever you want, but in moderation.

yeahman eggs are bad. they are ok in moderation but not everyday!!!i dont eat eggs anymore, never used to like them much, but both my mums parents died young from heart attack so when i realised this it pranged me to think about what cholesterol i ate.

i dont care about what i eat - if it tastes nice ill eat it, im quite big but i dont care - i enjoy every mouthful and dont get out of breath up the stairs. the only two diet things i care about are cholesterol and being veggie/vegan. being vegan sorts out the cholesterol problem.

id really try cuttin back on the eggs!!

Unhappy

Yeah, that's why I got so worried - I ate eggs practically every day. Whether it was eggs for breakfast, a boiled egg in my salad, or an omlette for dinner... you get the picture. I am IN TO EGGS! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, yeah - I'm sitting at my desk right now eating a tofu/mushroom/onion breakfast burrito. It's not bad. But it's not eggs. I made a whole batch of the burrito filling last night and I'm going to use it all up, for sure. After it's gone though. I'm switching to something else for breakfast. Tofu just can't go pound for pound with the mother of all deliciousness, EGGS!

I absolutely love eggs. I eat them, cheese, and butter like a madman, cholesterol be damned. Mmm, bacon, too. Lots of bacon.

Aaanyway, you touched on only one very slight thing: There's a big difference between fat and cholesterol, but there are also two distinct types of cholesterol!

LDL Cholesterol = bad This is the stuff that leads to heart attacks, obstructed blood vessels, etc.

HDL Cholesterol = good This stuff actually helps prevent heart attacks by helping remove arterial plaque.

Also, did you know that most of the cholesterol in your body is produced by your own liver? The intake of "bad" (saturated, trans) and "good" (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated) fats affect the cholesterol production. Sooo, you could actually eat what are considered "bad" fatty/cholesterol foods that result in higher LDL, as long as you counter them with higher HDL foods such as fish and nuts, as well as LDL-lowering foods high in soluble fiber. (Whole wheat, oats, etc.)

Well, thanks for this/ I was busy yesterday afternoon scaring all the girls in the office with my talk of egg cholesterol and so one of them popped off with an article outlining everything you did this morning!! I would say ‘great minds think alike’ but she’s kind of a bitch and I don’t wanna categorize you with her

Anyway, yeah, so – as bad as that tofu shit WASN’T – I’m back on to eggs. I’m still willing to do one whole + one egg white though. I seriously didn’t notice the difference, and hey, why not cut back where you can?? Limiting egg intake, because they’re the most cholesterol rich food next to liver, is one thing – but I never once considered limiting any of my other true loves: butter, bacon (oh, god, never bacon), ice cream, cream cheese, well - cheese in general, steak, etc… what’s life without quality of life after all? And speaking of quality of life: I’ve just posted a new topic.

List your 10 favorite foods of all time!

Yeah, so do I AND so *am* I! Heheh!! My diet is so fattening I'm almost ashamed. I can't help it though, all the best foods are full of fat. I actually used to eat butter when I was a kid, and don't even get me started on bacon. Cured meats? Forget about it! BRING ON THE NITRATES! I'm super stoked to try the house made salumi's at A16 when I'm up in SF next weekend! HOT DAMN!

...and remember, most negative effects of food can also be reduced by proper exercise. Drink lots of water too...

I could go for some eggs and bacon right now... mmmmm

Most problems with cholesterol are hereditary. Food can impact your cholesterol levels, but only to a certain degree. I would suggest you have them checked periodically, and as long as they are well inside the safe range, eat all the eggs you want. Besides, I believe the ladies have it much better than guys in general when it comes to cholesterol so you are most likely fine.

Unfortunately, exercise has no impact on cholesterol. It's all about genetics and diet. Don't stress too much, you are too young to be worrying about it so much. Besides, when and if it ever become a problem, I am sure Pfizer will have a solution for you.
