Ok I was reading the paper this weekend and stumbled on a hot topic at the meet up in Homewood. King Crazylegs was telling us a story of not being able to go into Libya and what do I then find out. Well it appears as if Libya has now decided to open up to the US finially. So no more worring about not being a citizen of a country any more crazylegs!!LOL I just thought this was the coolest thing. I am looking more into the country now as a real travel destination. Any one ever been ther an have a story or two.

My friend's dad is an oil man and went to Libya recently. Not terribly impressed, but he's not a fan of middle eastern nations anyway... I was thinking of taking a long jaunt through the mid east next winter, maybe I'll add libya...

As for Syria, it would be just fine... I don't know why you wouldn't want to go.. Lebanon is a little more unstable right now, with tensions about redeployment of syrian troops and whatnot.. One of my friends is dual syrian/us and he was going to go spend some time there to work on his fluency in arabic... But, he found out (ahead of time, good thing) that if he crosses the border they'll put him in the army.. And if that happens he forfeits us citizenship as a traitor or something.... crazy..

Yeah, Ghaddaffi opened up his country to Americans and axed his weapons programs as a result of our invasion of Iraq. I guess thats one good thing to come out of the war so far. Terrorism seemed to be kind of top-down in Libya, so Im guessing that it would be a lot safer than in a country where terrorism is more entreprenurial. You could be one of the trailblazers in that country. I dont know about Syria though, its still the terrorism capital of the world for the sheer number of groups that operate out of there.

Well, I imagine nothing would happen to me if I went to Syria...it's just the non-mainstream Middle East for an American, right now, is probably not the best idea. If I got a good deal, or knew someone who was offering to show me around, I'd probably go ahead and do it, anyway.

It's not like it's on my "No Go" list, like Columbia or Iraq or anything...

I'm reading a most interesting book right now which has piqued my interest in Yemen. Apparently all the leftover arms from every war since 1914 have accumulated in the northern mountains. Entire souks sell everything from Iranian handgrenades to old british tanks (with two days notice), right out in the open. All men carry sub-machine guns and long daggers, at the very least, although they do have to disarm in order to enter the hospital... And to top it off, they're all qat addicts...

AND they have a quaint little custom in Yemen of kidnapping foreignors. Seriously. Guys from some remote province will drive into the capital, pick up a foreignor, and take him home. They hold out for the government to come, fix some bridge, improve a road, etc, before they release them. Just the country custom of old boy politics, I guess.

So, unless you can afford to extend a trip by a few months, unexpectedly (supposedly, you're treated really nice, as a guest), be careful...

Have you checked to see what the US is saying about US citizens going to Lybia? Might want to check out that side of things too!
