Tanzania and Kenya

I am booked to go on the orphan care programme in Mawanza, Tanzania from July until mid August 2007. I will be flying in to Nairobi and spending a few days there before heading across to Tanzania. I want to do this by bus, has a nybody heard of this being safe?

I'm sure you'll be fine, AND I AM TOTALLY JEALOUS!!! What a fantastic time that will be. :bday:

I second that you'll be fine. I've heard the bus district in Nairobi isn't that great of an area (but that's pretty much everywhere). Travel by day may be safer (and would allow you to see the pretty scenery).

I'm jealous!! :kisscheek:

careful - the librarian from my high school went to tanzania and some guys followed her back to her hotel and attacked her with machetes. now she's blind and deaf in one ear. umm... not to scare ya or anything. thats just my only tanzania story. come back with some good stories then i'll have something more cheerful to say if anyone ever mentions tanzania! have fun.

I'm sorry I'm of no help here.. in Africa I've only been to Egypt. :p

Isn't there anyone at the orphan care programme that can give you details or their own experience?

You definitely do have to be careful in Africa, by and large. Kenya in particular has a reputation for crime...i.e. the nickname "Nai-robbery." I would recommend that while waiting for your bus, stay among other people in a restaurant, cafe, etc. If you know folks there, have them hang out with you until your bus leaves.

Before going to Africa last November, I read a large number of traveler's accounts, both online and published in books. You CAN take public transport safely there. Just use all your common sense danger avoiding tactics.
