mediterranean cuisine??
a few of my family members have been diagnosed with moderate cardiovascular problems over time, and I called my mom last night to see that apparently my stepdad also has had some problems now as well. the cardiologist suggested a Mediterranean diet as the best way to lower the risk of any future cardio problems, so my whole house is apparently going into a frenzy about this whole Mediterranean thing, the whole family is getting into it.
my question is, what kinds of foods are in Mediterranean cuisine? I know a bit about international cuisine, but little to nothing about Mediterranean food. I myself would like to better my diet and be healthy and cut my risk of things like cardiovascular disease and cancer, and I know diet is a big part of it.
so yeah, anything anyone knows about this would be greatly appreciated. I've read a few articles in medical journals about it but it's not every specific... so I know this isn't exactly travel related but I know a good bit of you TPers have been out in that area and would have better eyes on what entails "Mediterranean cuisine" anyway.
thanks

I mean.. is Italian mediterranean? Umm... I usually think of hummus, olives, cheese light pastas and wine. But that's just me.
http://www.mediterranean-food.net/
http://www.mediterraneandiet.gr/words.html (this one a little more helpful)
http://www.mediterraneandiet.gr/health.html (this seems very aggressive but very pro-olive oil; and it has a nice chart type thing)
http://www.cuisinenet.com/digest/reg...an/index.shtml
Quote:
1. Use olive oil as the principal fat, replacing other fats and oils.
2. Drink a moderate consumption of wine, normally with meals; about one to two glasses per day for men and one glass per day for women.
3. Eat fresh fruit as a typical daily dessert; limit sweets with a significant amount of sugar and saturated fat.
4. Incorporate an abundance of food from plant sources, including fruits and vegetables, breads and grains, beans, nuts, and seeds.
5. Eat minimally processed and seasonally fresh and locally grown foods.
6. Total dietary fat should range from less than 25 percent to over 35 percent of energy, with saturated fat no more than 7 to 8 percent of total calories.
7. Eat low to moderate amounts of cheese and yoghurt daily.
8. Consume low to moderate amounts of fish and poultry weekly; and limit eggs from zero to four servings per week.
9. Only eat red meat a few times or just one time per month.

Mmm, this looks like a really good idea. It's like semi-vegetarianism without the absolutely no red meat bit. I like... I like...

ohhhh thanks for the links!!!! yeah you're right, it is semi-vegetarian, actually semi-vegan cos they don't do dairy so much either.
I think this is a pretty sweet idea, I guess it gets raves from the American Heart Association (prolly why the cardiologist suggested it), and in my opinion you can never be too healthy.
I'm most likely going to try this out with my fam even though I'm not at home cos I think it's a good way to eat. Plus I love fruit and no one is trying to deprive me of bread so I am happy.

Tomatoes (anticarcinogenic antioxidant lycopene)
Garlic (immune-boosting antiseptic & blood thinner)
Olive oil (monounsaturated fats)
Red wine (polyphenols)
Also, generally speaking:
Avoid trans-fats as they will spike your bad cholesterol.
And, saturated fats like cheese will raise both good & bad cholesterol, but bad by a slightly higher amount.
Animal protein acidifies your blood and leaches calcium from your bones, so control or balance your intake.
But you can eat lots of leafy greens to alkalize your blood too.
Remember, the natural blood pH (7.4) maintains slightly alkaline.

I always figured it meant a shit load of olive oil and garlic. Which I guess is incorporated into it.
