So I'm allergic to alcohol, and I'm going to europe for six weeks. I've never been but from what I understand many Europeans are proud of their wines and beers. Since I don't want to get really sick and I don't want to offend anyone either, how do I politely avoid alcohol in Europe?

Thanks in advance!

Allergic to alcohol..... tis a shame...anyhow, I think the easiest think would be to say that you don't drink - more believable and makes more senes to more people. I am deathly allergic to fish and I have never had a problem explain to people that it makes me sick.

i was out for a meal in a vietnamese resturant with some friends and we went to bar after the meal and about half an hour after we left the resturant i start having an allergic reaction and have to go into hospital overnight. so a while later i go to get some tests done to see what it was coz it hadnt happened before. so i go and they try all kinds of food and stuff and nothing comes up, so i have to go again for tests and then they try a few other things and one of them comes up that im allergic to. and it was cockroaches so there muysta been roaches in the kitchen of that resturant or something. I currently live in the Mosel Valley of Germany, (wine!) and my landlord works for (and generously supplies us with) Bitburger beer - but I hardly ever drink. I find "No, thank you" works well when a bottle is being poured, and at a restaurant I just order whatever I want, which never raises any eyebrows.

If you are pressed, a cousin who worked in Moscow for USAID, and was concerned about the whole vodka culture, taught us the save-all phrase of all time:

"My doctor says I can't." Not my fault, that stinking dr wants to spoil all my fun. Works a treat.

Don't worry about insulting your hosts, a. it's your life we're talking about here, and b. you can more than make up for it by appreciating the wonderful food and learning as much as you can about the culture and history of the places before you go, so you can really appreciate them while you're there, and ask informed questions whenever you get the chance.

If you come to Germany, we'll have to go out for ... water!

Most cooking alcohol (i.e. Shery, etc) doesn't have alcohol in it after it's cooked because it evaporates.

Haha! I can't drink either since having a liver transplant...it's funny how people react. I'll tell them I had a transplant and they're like, "oh, that's cool!" and then I tell them I can't drink and they're like "Oh man, that sucks. I'm sorry." Oh well...I was never into alcohol in the first place, and I'd rather be alive. So don't pity us!! :greenguy:

Yeah, he's pretty cool (even though he does remind us of Garrison Keillor). My husband was delighted to come home one day to discover two boxes (24s) of assorted Bitburger products on the doorstep. That is pretty much fighter pilot heaven. For Christmas he even gave the kids Bitburger backpacks, which they'll never be able to take to school stateside!

I'll introduce you to him next time you're in town...
