I'm moving to England in June for 3 years and I was wondering if English food is really as bad as people say. What restuarants and bars do you recommend for someone going to England for the first time?

I'm not a big fan of native English food, other than fish & chips.

However, they do have LOADS of yummy ethnic food everywhere, Asian, Middle Eastern, etc...

England is the place for Indian food most the modern Indian dishes where created there. They have great resturants

I think the French are to blame for everyone thinking the English can't cook and compared to traditional French food, traditional English food is a bit bland.

I love English food... at base, a lot of it may be bland, but with all that brown sauce, malt vinegar, and other condiments, you're all set! Granted, much of what goes as "English food" in us foreigners' minds is pub food, and that's not the healthiest stuff in the world, but as mentioned, it's a really diverse country, and you can find authentic food of just about any sort there. Except Mexican. God damn if I can't find any decent Mexican food in the UK.

My biggest complaint about English food has to do with the sandwiches. They are the wimpiest things I have ever seen. Generally, the filling is so insignficant as to be invisible. Basically, two pieces of bread which such a thin layer of spread that you cannot even taste it.

That said, I have had some great pub meals, especially in some of the country pubs. Hunter's pies, grilled lamb...good stuff. Plus, as others have said, the Indian food is absolutely the best.

An English buddy of mine told me that recently chicken tikka masala had recently surpassed fish and chips as the most popular food in Britain. Crazy.

The only english food I found remotely palatable was Chips (minus the fish) and Cornish Pasties. Otherwise, stick to ethnic foods. And you can get nearly everything there you can get here. Except decent peanut butter, chips ahoy, ramen, and reese's cups. And ranch dressing. I had a gf of mine ship me some.

English food will forever remind me of my childhood, especially the holidays, for the simple reason that my mum is British and so cooked accordingly. So, yes, I love English food. Yorkshire pudding with brown sause....hmmmmmm

Ah yes, I forgot - English pizza is VERY THICK with toppings - and good.

And so is their black pudding...you all MUST try that!

But thats not entirely true.. there are a few Chiquito Restaurants dotted about the place & others!

When visiting Liverpool, after we left the bar, Bri treated me to chips 'n gravy and it was certainly tasty...poutine without the cheese, and I like poutine (when made with cheese, not cheese curds).

Oh, believe me, I've been to a number of "authentic" Mexican restaurants in England and even they don't hold a candle to some of the lousiest places in North America, but hey, that's distance and lack of proper ingredients for ya.

In fact, it was after a trip to London with a couple of half-Mexican friends that we decided we're going to open a real taqueria in town and start our own dodgy Mexican food empire in Europe. Muahahaha!

Used to work in Woolworths and they often stocked up on Reeces Cups! They where faaaaaaaaabulous!
