Cool

So...Monday at sundown is Purim, the day commemorating the story of Esther...

Haman was the chief advisor to the king of Persia and wished for the death of the entire Jewish people, and Esther, who was a Jew and was able to hide her Jewish heritage with help from her uncle Mordechai. After fasting for three days, Esther risked her life by confronting the king with Haman's plot and by speaking for the Jewish people.

The King, seeing the evil in Haman, had him hung for his treachery before his plot was executed.

It's called Purim because in hebrew Purim means "lots," as in those things you cast...not like "lots of stuff." haha. Haman cast purim to determine the date to execute his plot to exterminate the Jews.

Anyway, Purim begins with a brief fast, then two days of feasting, and above all else, drinking. Lots and lots of drinking.

It is a mitzva(commandment) to all Jewish people to get completely shitfaced on Purim. The mitzva says you are to drink so much wine as to get so drunk that you cannot tell the difference between "cursed be Haman" and "blessed be Mordechai."

Sounds good to me.

So...to all my fellow Goyim, and my Jewish brothers and sisters in punkness out there, lechaim!! Drink up for me!

and uh yea...fuck Haman! Yea! :P

Ah, me too. I got to play Yente a few years ago. How fun was that. My husband played in the orchestra, so the kids were totally immersed in it, too. Now they can sing all the songs, though being mostly girls they do kinda gravitate toward "Matchmaker".

Interesting, too, in that Purim's kinda the opposite of Mardi Gras - fast first, then feast. Not, party for a week, then repent for a month and a half...
