Are you thinkin of going to Surfers at all? There are heaps of great bars there.. Shooters is the top bar to go to on the coast. Great crew - top service - good music (just top of the pops kinda music). Alot of the backpackers in Surfers have pub crawls which are good fun. Melbas is great. My Bar is just below Shooters if you're into House music. The drink is just across the road. Most bars have door charges though. Depends on how busy it is.. The people are friendly. Its a holiday destination so no one is very serious. They're all pretty relaxed. Its worth a look.. I hope this helps. Have fun

I was in Sydney around New Years and had a blast. I found a place downtown, next to the hostel I stayed at... damn booze. Can't remember the name of either the bar/club or hostel. I think it used to be a Planet Hollywood or something. Anyway, I was pissed by the time I walked out of that place. Damn good fun!

Also found another place over in Manley (again next to my hostel). Just wander around the main drag, head towards the beach, hand a left and follow the music... you'll find it.

Surfer's has a bomb reputation - never been, but leave us a line if you love it. Melbourne wasn't half bad... again too much to drink so I have no idea where I ended up, but somewhere in St. Kilda's.

i'd like to dispute this call, i'm from Adelaide and saturday nights go off, it just depends on what type of scene your into though.

Most places on the east side (rundle street) finish up about earlish (2am) but there a still a few things open (Sugar, Fumos, Exchange, Church, PJ's, etc.) but the places on the west side of town go till dawn.

Here are just a few i'll mention:

East Side of Town
General Havelock (closes @ midnight - great though),
Fumo Blu (cocktail lounge style),
Austral (busy pub usually live music),
Belgium Beer Bar (extra large pints - older crowd),
East End Exchange (young crowd, club/pub though).

West Side of Town
Cumberland Arms (pub turned club, busy after 11pm),
Kings Head (up market pub/club),
Heaven (adelaide's only last super club - always packed),
Savy Bar (good little club),
Grace Emily (small alt. pub with live music),
Mojo (small club),
Vodka Bar (extra small club),
Cargo Club (another club),
Garage (an older crowd club hangout),
Rise (go nuts @ this club till midday).

There are heaps more but these are just a few better ones, and then there is places outside the CBD, ie. the Alma, and places @ Glenelg (eg. the Grand, the Pier, etc.)

Sydney has an awesome nightlife and there are many clubs/bars around Darling Harbour.
I live in Perth and there is a reasonable nightlife. You just have to know where to go on what nights. If you make it out to the west I can show you a good time.
