I was supposed to stay at the Rising Cock (or The Camel Toe as I hear it's going by!) but I heard it was shut down because of sanitary reasons, so ended up staying somewhere else. Anyway, they were still sort of running, as we found out when we went to cancel, and people we talked to that stayed there enjoyed it! In any case, wherever you end up staying, have a great time in Lagos. We heard of people that went for 2 days, stayed for more, and that's exactly what we did. It is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO I think The Rising Cock and The Camels Toe are two seperate hostels in Lagos. The Rising Cock is right across the street from the HI hostel there (which is a great place), and the Camels Toe is apparently around the corner on some side street, but I never could find it. I arrived in Lagos late in the afternoon and was hoodwinked into paying 35 euro for a double room becuase I was assured that there would be no hostel beds anywhere in town by some guy at the train station. I know I should never go with those people at the station, but sometimes Im just too lazy to put the required effort in. I ended up staying at the HI hostel the next day and stayed there for four more nights. Lagos is an awesome time.

I stayed at the Rising Cock for about a week in March 2005. It was a blast, but be prepared to party all night. So much fun. It's run by a couple half-Portuguese guys from Massachusetts, and everyone there speaks English. Don't expect much culture-- go to Lisboa for that. Lagos is all about the beach and the nightlife. But it's a great time.

Actually they are sort of the same place (because they're owned by the same guy) and yeah they are still running, and everybody says that they're amazing. When I arrived in Lagos I didnt have a hostel booked, I was just going to go and see if any openings @ the rising cock developed b/c everybody said it was the place to be, and ended up being personally escorted to like 4 places by a guy....who was actually working at the time...until I found a place to stay. Now that's Aussie courtesy for ya!
But anyway, I ended up staying at this little old lady's apt that she rents rooms out of which was right across from the youth hostel and was amazing (the youth hostel is the one that recommened it....if she was booked they would have given me a matress to sleep on in the bar). It was 15 Eu. a night but only 3/4 ppl to a room (with real beds) and there was a kitchen/fridge you could use as well as a laundry service she provides where you give her the laundry for 5 EU and it comes back all clean and lovely....it was amazing (especially when you come back after 6hrs at the beach of surfing and you're just completely exhausted). I highly recommend the lil' old lady, especially since it's so easy to meet people in Lagosw/ all the bars/beaches/hostels and whatnot.
