I am going to be traveling alone to London between August 1st-August 7th and I need some advice on where would be the best place to stay for a girl staying alone to be safe but also meet people.

Any advice? I have looked at all the hostel pages but I'd rather hear someone's actual experiences.

Well, I'll go ahead and give you my experience. :D
Last time I was in London in '06 I stayed at the St. Christophers Village for about 3 days and the Astor Quest for about 4 days. Both hostels were great in their own way.
The Astor, i thought, had a great location, almost across the street from Hyde park. I thought it was a more kick back chill hostel if anything. But the whole time their I felt very safe.
St. Christophers was a lot of fun. It's a really big hostel and it has an attached bar (Belushi's). Even though it was big and crazy, I still felt like the security was good, key cards to get into everywhere. Both of em were pretty close to tube stations as well.
Either way I think they were both great hostels.

Good luck in London, it's an awesome city.

I'm a single girl and I'm going to London all alone in a few weeks. I've got reservations at the Picadilly Hostel so I'll let you know how it goes!

If you decide to change the Piccadilly Hostel (I believe it was lost_in_texas that was there and decided to go elsewhere) here are the ones I have some experience with...

The Generator - Off of the Piccadilly line (Russel Square) very loud party hostel. The rooms were a bit smelly, and the police came both nights I was there. Cheap drinks in the bar downstairs. Cool atmosphere but I can't personally recommend it.

The Globetrotter's Inn - A little bit removed on the Zone1/Zone 2 edge (Ravenscourt Gardens area) but a nice neighborhood. A little quiet but clean comfortable etc.

My sister recently stayed at Palmer's Lodge (also Zone 2) and enjoyed it.

huh, didn't even realise this thread was in general discussions. It's moved now.

the hostel I stayed at (The Albert) has closed since I was in London, so this summer I'm staying at the Astor Quest. Here's hoping!
