My first stop into Portugal will be tough to top. Having met a few awesome people at Samay in Sevilla, I did the first group travel thing with about 4 others to Lagos Portugal. The city is like a 1950s beach town (think Amity from Jaws without the sharks) and the Rising Cock hostel is the college dorm I never had.

The town encourages the type of long term traveler who has a week or more to kill and doesn't feel the need to see the sites since the sites are the beach and bizarro rock formations. Free crepes every morning and free internet. Awesome hostel, easily in my top three ever! (I am inclined to say best)

Recommended to people that aren't even coming to Portugal.

i enjoyed this hostel as well..but for different reasons...first off...the owner..maria..is like a mother and cooks for ppl at the hostel which i think is amazing....second...i LOVED the aussie guy i met in lisbon and there were no openings in lagos (July) and she got him a room..... and third...they have double bed bunk beds....so his room was mine...haha we shared a bed and there was a couple above us...if that isn't backpacking at its best i dont know what is....o yes i totally forgot about the bar across the street that they own as well...NanaBah or Nanabar...i dont remember but the owner and her sons are fantastic

any explanation as to the name of the place? and if the answer is "cause it's funny", then the hostel owners sound awesome and I may just have to make detour to portugal just to tell them how hilarious they are.
