Just thought Id drop a warning to anyone considering staying at The 3 ducks.....please dont. Our friends got scammed and had to pay twice, our room was uber unsanitary, the service sux, and it is a tweaker haven. There you go :P

Unfortunately we had the misfortune to stay here for one night on Aug 30, 2005. Without going into details - it was a choice of either getting a room there or sleeping at the airport (all the other hostels were booked solid).

All the bad things everyone keeps saying about it are true - it's filthy, the toilet facilities outside are barely better then outhouses (complete with holes in the roof), depending on what room you are staying in you will be forced to use the showers in the courtyard. There is a church across the road and the bell chimes on the hour, so you may be woken up. If not, then the metro (which runs directly under the hostel every 2 min and causes everything to shake) will wake you up in the morning and/or keep you up at night. The rooms are tiny, dark and over cramped. The beds are uncomfortable and filthy. The walls are covered with ancient wall paper which is all scribbled on or partially ripped off. The plaster on the ceilings is falling off and there is visible mould in the corners. The curfew is 2am and there is a lockout for cleaning (and I use the word 'cleaning' loosely, as the place looked like it hasn't been cleaned forever). If you have a choice where to stay - go to the other place!

The price is 23 euro a night for a dorm room and it's really close to the Metro. It is also about 10-15min to walk to the Eiffel Tower. Breakfast is included (baguette, butter, jam, coffee, juice, tea). Internet is available, but it's pay as you go on those annoying public terminal things.

I loved the 3 ducks! I thought it had character and the staff where great they let us stay up all night in the luggage room drinking even though thats wheres they slept. The bar is also the cheepest in Paris.

The showers aren't the best alright but I thought the atmosphere in the place was great it was one of the top hostels I stayed at, we used to get really drunk at the hostel and head down to the tower to watch the lights. I left Pat the plank there and everything!

Unfortunitly it's being shut down in december because of noise.

Oh and the bar closes at 2am but you can talk to whoevers on duty for the night and they'll let you back in at anytime (or you can climb the courtyard wall) they expect e3 for the service though. So there is no cerfew really.

The recommendation on the booking section of the site comes from the booking engine, driven by HostelWorld, which mostly has favorable reviews... However, I find the forums at TravelPunk to be FAR more useful for finding hostel reviews than relying on HW's numerical ranking system.

If you can't find a friendly TP'er to give you feedback on a hostel (or can't find one in the many reviews posted here) try using Google to find other qualitative reviews of specific hostels.. For instance, do a search on "3 Ducks" "paris" "review" and you'll be sure to find many opinions out there, beyond the veritable chorus here that says it stinks... literally!
