Okay, so here is my situation:

My gf's grandmother has the ashes of her husband in a ceramic jar (he was cremated obviously) and he's been in this jar for 10 years. I want to take it upon myself to "set him free."

He's always wanted to roam with the buffalo in Alaska and after speaking with my gf, her mother, and the involved grandmother ... that's exactly what I (and the grandmother) want to do. However, the grandmother is too old to do this trip and wants me and her granddaughter to do it.

So ... we're thinking we'll turn this into our spring break trip and do something that most college students aren't doing!

So here's where I need some help from people who've been to Alaska and maybe have some experience here.

We're looking for a cabin we could rent that is in a beautiful scenic area --- mountains, lakes, hiking trails, fishing even (if the water isn't frozen too deep of course) but one that would give us access to buffalo. Granted we won't be able to get right on top of them but at least to their stomping grounds!

...I could use all of your help on this TP --- this would mean a lot to me, my gf, and the grandmother.

I used to live in the Yukon and made some trips to Alaska, here's what I know->

Lot's of cabin's around Homer, Alaska, it's a cool little fishing village out on a spit. I personally liked the scenery around Valdez, Alaska the most. And Mt McKinley is a pretty cool mountain. But overall, I would go with Homer, it probably offers all that you're looking for.

It'll still be pretty cold there right now, so bring a coat, and some cabins may be closed for the season. Other than that, the only other thing may be price, most things up north ain't too cheap.
