So my cousin and I just decided to go to New York City during our Spring Break. I'm pretty excited, so I just wanted to share more than anything at this point!

But of course I have questions, like know of any good hostels? And we're planning on being in Montreal to visit another cousin before or after, so what's the best way to travel between? Also, I'll only be 20, so I gotta ask what the drinking situation will be like. Will I be able to get into places? Any advice is great. Thanks guys!

I don't know about hostels in NYC...I know there are some, but when I lived there, I had a house to stay in so I didn't need to stay in hostels!

As for the drinking situation, unless you have an id that says you are 21, I am thinking you will have some troubles even getting into bars. I was always carded at every bar I ever went to in NYC. So that's probably news you didn't want to hear.

Ok so things to do. I love Chinatown. It's like a different world. There is lots of shopping and just some really spectacular sites. Be sure to get to Central Park too, another favourite place of mine. There are some NYC threads kicking around on here as well so search those out for some other tips on the big apple!

Yea, you'll have to get a GOOD fake ID to drink. Good luck

Count on not drinking, and also count on having a blast. NYC is great to visit. Places not to miss: Museum of Natural History in Central Park (probably the best museum I've ever been too), Central Park in general (especially during spring), be sure to leave Manhattan (Brooklyn is awesome), the Bronx Zoo is a world class zoo. There is so much to do in NYC that someone should write a book about it (that's a joke in case you didn't get it). Have a blast!

Thanks for all the advice. It's not the end of the world if I can't get into bars, and I'm sure I won't be bored! I'll definitely try and visit all the sights you all mentioned.

You could live your whole life in New York and not see everything there is to see. I'd recommend the Metropolitan Museum of Art if you're into any type of art or culture. Try the Empire State Building, it's never a very long wait early in Spring and it's a hell of a view. Plus you can stand at the spot from "Sleepless in Seattle."

Mowark is definitely right about Brooklyn. Get out there and just walk around. Check out Prospect Park--the other Frederick Law Olmstead park--and Flatbush avenue.

One of the best things about New York is the food, and some people will probably disagree with me about this, but you can get the best food you'll ever eat between $2 and $200. You really pay for service. Don't eat at McDonald's: go into a whole-in-the-wall. Anywhere in Brooklyn or on side-streets in Manhattan (the shorter blocks). Eat in Little Italy and China town.

I am plannin on staying in manhatten about 3- 4 days before I fly over to Europe. I was wondering if there were subways or trains or whatnot from Newark International or JFK to manhatten (where I hope to be staying in a hostel).

Thx.
