ok so i know the legal drinking age in the US is 21, but ive been looking around and discovered that almost every hostel in the US, in particular NYC wants to keep your passport while you stay at their hostel.

so my Question is what other sorts of ID will be accepted? Would they accept an Australian Drivers Licence???

thanks!

Usually, the hostel doesn't keep it, but rather needs to look at it and copy down the number into their log. Some places will go as far as to photocopy it.

I'm not sure if foreign drivers licenses work in lieu of a passport, but I know French national IDs do.

I doubt you'd have a problem in larger cities, especially if you have an authentic Australian accent - but as Omisan said, most hostels don't even keep the passport.

Yeah, I've never heard of a hostel (in the US or otherwise) wanting to keep your passport for the duration of your visit. Actually I wouldn't even stay at a hostel if that was one of their requirements.
