Yea, so ever year Beth's dad rounds up as much of the family as possible, loads 'em up and sets off to a new destination for hiking and camping. This year we have picked Mt Washington in New Hampshire as our focal point. It is the highest point in NH and has the world's record for the highest windspeed ever recorded on Earth (231 mph).
Anyhow, so far the plan is to leave Chicago and head to Niagara Falls, then through upstate New York into Vermont to Mt. Mansfield (highest point) and then to Mt. Washington. After that we are planning on headind into Maine and possibly going to Arcadia NP and Baxter SP (highest point). After that well the only plan is to head back through New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario - doing hiking/camping along the way.

If you're going from Quebec to Ontario then I reccomend going through Ottawa on the way (it's really nice in the summer) and then heading a few hundred km's further west to Algonquin. ( Yes, I AM biased ) The campsites along Highway 60 in the southern part of the pare are great and there are tons of wonderful scenic trails for day hikes. If you want to be more adventerous I would suggest doing some canoeing on the park's biggest lake - Lake Opeongo. If you have more then 3 days you want to spend there, rent a canoe or two and paddle out to one of the interior campsites on the lake. I love the little islands on the opening of the North Arm of the lake. If you get that far you have a great option for a day trip to a boggy/swampy creek, called Hail Storm Creek in the north western tip of the lake where you can see moose! You can also check out my camping report from the last time I was there 2 weekends ago.
For more information go here for Ontario Parks and Algonquin Park.
And just for good measure here is a map of Algonquin.

Alright...so here is the short and skinny on our trip...
We left Chicago early in the morning the first day and drove straight to Niagra Falls. The falls are impressive, but the area surrounding are uber tourist-trapistic!
We continued through New York State to Selkirk Shores State Park on Lake Ontario in NY. We got up the next morning and drove to Vermont, crossing Lake Champlain by ferry (beautiful) and headed to Underhill State Park. We camped there for the night and got up the next morning to hike the highest point in Vermont: Mt. Mansfield. It was a nice alpine hike and then as we reached the top it gave way to a beautiful rock face covered in fog and high winds.
After hiking down we headed to New Hampshire where we stayed in Mt Washington State Park. The following morning we got up and hiked up Mt. Washington, which was an unbelievable hike on and amazing mountain (see details below in first post). It was one of those hikes that you feel completely exhausted at the end of, but so entirely satisfied. On top of the mountain there also happens to be the worlds oldest mountain top hostel (good TP fact).
Next we headed to Maine. We stayed in Mt Blue State Park - which we decided was being used as a governement testing ground for mosquito warfare It was a beautiful Park on a lake, with mountains, but the mosquitos where simply overwhelming.
The next morning we headed down to Acadia National Park which was unbelievable, especially from up on top of Cadalac Mountain, which had 360 views of the surrounding area. We had a nice lobster dinner while in the area, and enjoyed meals on the beach. I also got dubbed Thunder Hole (after one of the spots in Acadia) for the rest of the trip.
After a day and a half in Acadia, we went up to Baxter State Park, which is completely lost in the wilderness. It is a little hiker heaven at the beginning/end of the Appalation trail. The following morning we got up and made the 10 mile hike up and back on Mt Katadin, the highest point in Maine. It seemed to never end on the way up, and the terrain kept changing, but it just made the finish that much better.
As we left Baxter we spotted a huge moose in a lake dunking his head down and eating vegitation - it was so majestic, and just topped of a great trip. We then hauled it back to Chicago during the next day and a half via Canada (NB, QB, ON) and Michigan. We got loads of pictures (5 rolls), but it will be a while before I get them on here...but I will get them on here.
More details to come....

Awesome, KCL -- glad to hear you had a great time.
I'm pondering over the nickname, too. Wouldn't have anything to do with thunderous noises emanating from...well, you know...!

Wow - you guys covered quite a bit of ground! I know what you mean about the mosquitoes. They can make the most beautiful place seem like a nightmare.
Can't wait for the pics!

All Thunder Hole jokes aside...on the night that we had our lobster dinner we also tried two of Bar Harbour Brewing Co.'s brews...Thunder Hole Ale (yea..I know ) and Cadillac Mtn Stout. Without and exaggeration, I can honestly say these were some of the best US brews I've ever tasted!

Hey KCL and SD - glad you guys had a great time in my home state! Unfortunately, I was in Asia from May 28th through June 11th. Otherwise, I could have met you for a brew or two. The White mountains are great and I am glad you got a chance to hike Mt Washington. Did you get a chance to see the Mt Washington Hotel?? It kind of looks almost like a castle on the south side of the base of the mountain. I am sorry I missed you guys but glad you had a great time!

After actually making the hike up it feels so much nicer than seeing the "This car climbed Mt. Washington" bumper stickers you see all over the place around here. It really does feel like you accomplished something.

About 20 miles north of Boston. I am right on the NH line really, I am like 15 minutes from it.
I head up to the White Mountains all the time to go snowboarding as well. I usually stay in N. Conway during the winters (I don't know if you remember the town or not) but one truly awesome place to go if your in the are again is the Kankamagus Highway. It's called a highway but it is about 30 miles of road that goes through woods, cliffs, a river that in some spots has smoothed rocks so smooth you can use them as waterslides, tons of hiking trails and camping. I am heading down to Cape Cod this weekend but hoping to make it up there in a week or two to go camping some more and hike the trails.
Also along the 'magus are tons of Moose (had one jump over the hood of my car about two or three years ago driving in the fog), Bears can occasionally be seen with cubs as well. It really is a great place to take off for the weekend or even just a day trip.
