Well.. if you are down by the Grand Canyon, you can bum around and look at some of the sites in Arizona and New Mexico on the way back. They have like Painted Desert, Petrified Forest, some other science things, many natural sites to see. You have Roswell if you the UFO crash is inticing at all.

Austin, Tx is supposed to have a great music/nightlife scene going on, I think its 6th street... could be mistaken though.

New Orleans is always interesting, although hot and humid as hell in the summer.

Memphis and Nashville are supposed to be rather entertaining. They have country music, wrestling, Elvis, etc.

Pigeon Forge, TN is like a kids heaven, with go karting and mini golf and arcades, that is always a good place to drop some cash for fun, and they have pretty cheap hotels. My buddy and I used to get a room for like $28.

After that, I guess its the Smoky Mountains and the Atlantic Coast in NC, and Virginia for good swimming and scantily clad people. Then you are pretty much back to NYC.

I can probably come up with more specific things, but those are just some ideas.

Thanks for your responses. Unfortunately I have limitations on that length of the trip. I have to get from the grand canyon to nyc in 5 days. There are a few different paths I can take, if anyone has experience or recommendations for a specific way I would love to hear about it.
1) Route66 : Grand canyon >> Albuquerque >> Amarillo >> St. Louis >>Louisville >> NYC
2) East: Grand canyon >> Albuquerque >> Dallas >> Memphis >> DC >> NYC
3) Mid: Grand canyon >> Albuquerque >> Dallas >> Memphis >> Louisville >> NYC

You'll probably hit the least metropolitan traffic if you take Route 66, although it's not exactly a super-highway... Still, with less traffic to deal with, it'll give you more time to stop and take in the scenery. That and you'll get a nice, fat slice of Americana along the way. I've done the western third of 66, and while it wasn't as weird or cool as I'd have expected over the years, there are definitely some quirky little stops here and there - as well as good stretches of solitude - that make it worthwhile. And unlike the Interstates, you can pretty much stop anywhere on the side of the road when you see something cool to photograph... or need to answer the call of nature
