Default Hostel in New York

Hey, I'm going to new york this may for about four days and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good hostels and if anyone had stayed at the YMCA before? I've browsed different hostels online but there are so many! I'm not 21 if that affects anything...

I've never stayed in a hostel in New York but one way to narrow things down would be deciding where you want your home base to be. The boroughs & their neighborhoods are each so different & location will decide the flavour of your stay as well as price.

Have fun!

I stayed in 3 hostels in Manhattan when I was there. The first was the Hostelling International affiliated place. It was big, pretty nice, but the bathrooms were incredibly nasty. I guess that could have just been poor luck but I left just because of that (and I'm not picky, it was really bad).

The second place I stayed was ok, but right on times square. That sounded like a good idea until I had to fight through the crowds of tourists to the subway a bunch of times.

Then I moved down to a place in either Soho or Triebca (can't remember the name, sorry) which finally suited me. I guess this is more a list of places not to stay...avoid tourist areas and the HI hostel. If you have a particular place you want to go a lot like the theater district just look for something within a couple of subway stops and it's a breeze to get there.

Thumbs up

One hostel I've stayed at when friends were in town visiting was Chelsea Star Hotel. Part hotel, part hostel. Pretty affordable at $30-$35/night for a bed depending on time of year. The staff was really friendly, everything was clean, good location too.

It's really close to Penn Station (quite touristy, but super easy access to subway to go elsewhere - The A,C or E will take you to the village (my fav part of the city).

Here's a link if you're interested.

Not stayed in one myself in NYC but my best friend's fiance is from NZ and he's stayed in several in NYC.

He's a fan of one called the Wanderer's Inn, they also have a "west" location, and for a dorm it's like 20-25/night (USD)

Hope this helps!

Do not stay in Bowery Whitehouse Hostel! I was plagued by bedbugs (and several decided to hitch a ride with me all the way to Maine), which was a moderately excruciating experience.

Last time I was in NYC I stayed in the Broadway Hostel (I think that's what it was called). A little away from downtown, but close to the subway...I think it was fine, since I don't remember anything particularly bad about it. It was 20-something bucks a night.

Just a follow up: we ended up staying in the Hosteling International and it was great, I asked for a locker and they bumped us out of a 15 bed dorm into a four bed for the same price. It was about 30$ a night, and I thought the bathrooms were pretty clean. Common areas were not spick and span, but always full of people.
It was a good choice
