Just started thinking about the states, and which parts i really want to cover. Indianna, Texas, and washington (seattle) are places that come to mind. What else would people who have travelled before me reccomend checking out. Want to get a feel for the famous usa sites, but also for everyday american life.

Theres soooo much written on europe/canada/oz, but the states i struggle to find reviews (apart from these boards) from others who have backpacked around before.

Look forward to hearing your views...

Depends on what you want to see. If you're a hiker, most of the cool national parks are out west. If you're into the sun and fun, well, the southeast (Florida and the Carolinas) are the place. If you like cool cities, San Fran, New Orleans...

Just curious...Indiana? What intrigues you about our neighboring state (I'm in Ohio)?

I second Mike's "Huuuuuh?" about Indiana, which I consider to be amongst our most boring states. I'd be remiss if I didn't strongly urge you to visit New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Washington D.C., and Chicago. Whether you're into big cities or not, these are kind of "must sees" if you want to see the whole range of American city life.

Indiana... hmm maybe the Indianapolis 500... I know its not to see the wonderful city of Gary. blech. Yes, being a frequent visitor to Indiana, I will say it is pretty boring. However not quite as boring as Iowa, Nebraska, or North Dakota.

Lindoro, you left Detroit off that list. You know you have to come here, get some Buddy's pizza. Although there are no hostels around here that I could find.

Ozpacka 02-15-2004 02:45 PM

Thanks guys for some great speedy replies. Hostelling in the states was one question i left out of my original post. My friend and i were thinking of splitting the costs and buying a cheap wagon, for both travel and accomodation purposes. Is this a safe and economical way to get around, and are there frequent camp sites (not trailer parks :torch: that we can book into just to sleep.

Oh, detroit will be in to the hit up list. Indianna is on my list cuz my friends uncle owns a ranch there, or thereabouts where we are going to spend a few days. Oh, and i also want to visit the university of Norte Dame. (south bend?)Its something ive wanted to do ever since i watched that movie, RUDY. Lame i know, but how could i sleep at night knowing i was so close, and yet so far away.

Cheers Guys.

Ok my American friends, this is your chance to give your State a boost, tell our Aussie friend what your state has to offer him, a full on play by play, things to do, things to see, place to go and what not...Get the hype started!!!

Renting a car or small RV or would be the best way to see the US for an extended period of time. There are all kinds of roadside accomodations that cater to people doing this.

ozpacka, come to Seattle!!! There really isn't any other place like it. We're very friendly here and there is LOTS to do. :)

joanofarc 02-19-2004 02:26 PM

1) san francisco
2) seattle
3) new orleans
4) miami
5) boston
6) new york
7) grand canyon, arizona
8) las vegas, nevada
9) kansas city, missouri (i love bbq!)
10) san diego - had to give a vote for the home town.

with the exception of #'s 1,3,7,10 and 8 - all of these are on my list.

Lots of good advice so far!

Being a New Yorker myself, I strong, strongly urge that you come for a visit. Don't let the fast paced, scowling businessman scare you off. Spend enough time here to really enjoy it! It's an awesome city.

Other than that, San Francisco and definitely Yosemite National Park. Check out Ansel Adams photographs of it. It's one amazing place. :)

If you come to New York, I'd be glad to talk to you and maybe even give you a tour and give you a "New York Through The Back Door" sort of list of things that you should see, besides the touristy stuff.

Have fun planning!

Ozpacka 02-20-2004 01:13 AM

Awwwwe thanks guys...

The states are going to be soooo exxcellent... Seems like forever till ill be there, but then again, there will be so much travelling done before then. I will be well seasoned, thats for sure.

New york was, funnily enough not on the original list, but now, for sure. Thanks YesVirginia.

Seattle, yesss, for the music history, and music scene. and will probably be my first stop in the states after vancover/canada.

Hoping to catch lots of concerts whilst im over there of bands that never come to Oz.

Down the west coast for pizza, then into mexico, then into texas, then to the Jack Daniels distillary, tennessee (anyone been there?).

Actually the states is going to be hard logistically to see everything in a short time. Im sure ill work it out.

Cheers

I've lived here for 21 years and havent even seen that much! Lol I have to agree with the concerts though, see as many as you can! What kind of music do you like? If you're into alt. rock stuff there's a magazine that I've done work for called alternative press. If you pass out their promotional material they'll give you free tickets to see the shows. I've seen, Moby, Busta, Good Charolette, and even got to go to Warp tour for free.

Also a must on your trip is my place. You wont see it posted on any of the maps... but it's always a hot spot

Ozpacka 02-24-2004 12:33 AM

Thats what im talkin' bout!

Yeah, a lot of bands dont come down this way, and im hoping to catch them, and yeah, mainly rock/alternative.

So your place, i bring the booze, you bring the party...

Sounds like a plan mate...

space virgin 02-24-2004 02:01 PM

let me know when you're getting to Seattle, we'll par-tay

SovietSurfer 02-26-2004 02:10 AM

If you're ever around the San Diego/Los Angeles area let me know, I can show you around (tons of stuff to do/see around here). I've lived here for almost 4 years now and there's still plenty of places I've never been to.

Same goes for San Francisco, if I happen to be in northern california at the time. That city is awesome (although I'd still say NY is the single most interesting city in the States).

ashpunk 02-26-2004 12:39 PM

:) I totally agree Sov! NY is an awesome place! Hey you're pretty close to me... when OZ comes by on his trip I'll have a party at my house and you can drive up to the OC. Oooooh maybe we can get TP to take a break and come down too. Nice... Okay I'm now planning on having a quasi TPUNK get together at my house!
