hey t-punkers,
I am applying to Smith College in Northampton MA for grad school, if I get in, the program is a travel junkies dream, with 3 consecutive summers of classes at the Smith campus in Northampton, and two 8 month placements somewhere in the U.S. between them. My first choice for my first placement is Northern California. We get a month off between the summer session and the placement and between the placement and the next summer session.

All in all, if I get in I will be living in 3 places in 27 months and driving cross-country 4 times.

I'm a camping/hiking/kayaking junkie and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of good places near Northampton, or just general recomendations of beautiful natural places that I can't miss when driving from Virginia to Northern California (I've never been West of Tennesee!)

I live in NH, which is just north of Mass. Drive up to the northern half of NH and you have some great hiking, skiing, etc. in the White mountains. There is also a lot of great outdoors in the western part of Mass as well. I think you will greatly enjoy your time at Smith. You are close to Boston, the ocean and the mountains. You really can't go wrong. Enjoy!!
