I've lived in Seattle for over 20 years, but grew up in Portland. I love each for different reasons. Seattle has all the big city positives... and negatives. Relative to Portland, it has more professional and cultural resources and opportunities. Traffic sucks. Mass transit is so-so. Real estate development is running rampant. There is a long running belief that Seattle is a hard town to hook into socially. I think it is true. There is a stoic, scandinavian undercurrent to the culture. There has been so much growth that many long-timers have reached there social saturation point (not "interviewing" for more friends). Plus, there is so much to do here that people are off DOING those things. This may also be true of Portland now too. Certainly it's not insurmountable, particualrly in a university setting.
Portland seems more approachable to me in some ways (although I may be romanticizing from my childhood)... transit is much better, growth is better managed. More public art (although Seattle is catching up). It also seems more "authentic" in some ways. Less commercial, but also more provincial (for better or worse).
