Folks
Just saw an offer of a dirt cheap flight to HNL at the end of march (always been my dream to go...) and was wondering if this is a good time to go?

I don't think there is a bad time to go. Hawaii is supposed to be crazy expensive, though.

We went in March several years ago - after winter in the Pacific Northwest, it was magnificent. Not steaming hot, but if you're going from Ireland, you'll be loving it. There were a few days when it was quite cool and stormy - we definitely needed a light sweater, but mostly it was very pleasant. Have also been in December - that was nice too.
It is expensive, no getting around that.

There's never a bad time, weatherwise. It's tropical - they get rain here and there in what we'd call summertime (especially this last spring/summer '06!) but overall, there's no off season in terms of weather.
However, Nov - February is peak as far as number of people going there, which I would avoid.
Thinkin' about going myself sometime next year.. if only I had enough time off!

I once read or heard that it snows one day a year in Hawaii. Is it true?

Uhhhh.. way more than once a year. Hawaii has mountains. With snow. And they have skiing and snowboarding. All those Dakine brand snowboard goods? Started in Hawaii...

Pretty much any time of year, the winter tends to bring higher surf to certain parts of the island, as well as slightly colder water (still warmer than most other places in the US). As far as it being expensive. It's cheap compared to European prices (sorry just got back from London). The only disadvantage is the lack of affordable hostel-style places to stay in while you are here. You do however have at the moment, airfare between islands for like $40 one-way.
Best time to go is for new years. Crazy fireworks everywhere, being done by the people, not by the city/state.
P.S. Mauna Kea (the place where that dude is snowboarding) has no ski lifts. Rather you grab a buddy's jeep and go back up the hill. Air is also in short supply that high up . heh
