Well...since you're going with your boyfriend, forgive me for making an assumption - BUT...if you wanted the ability to shag but didn't want to pay the $150+ for the privacy of a hotel room...
The Continental Hostel is relatively new...and they actually have 2 bed mixed dorms. Granted, it's probably a tiny room with a bunk bed...but you know, with only two of ya, it allows for a little privacy. So for the $25 each that you'd be spending at a hostel in NYC anyway, you two can share a (semi)private room.
I might check it out tomorrow and stay there, in which case I'll let you know how it is. From what I understand, it's just opened this month so it's probably nice.

Well, they don't have a website, at least not yet that I know of.
Yes, it'd be *around* $50 for the two of you in a room. It all depends on your dates. Just check it out by entering your dates on the travelpunk hostel search engine.

$24 a night? Nope. The lowest I've paid was around $20 a night. I'll let you know how the Continental is after this weekend. It's probably worth booking.

Let me walk you through this.
As I said in my first post, 2 bed mixed DORM.
$24 a night per person. Multiply that by 2.
$48. You might not be able to sleep in the same bed since it's probably bunk beds, but hey, at least you'll have privacy. Better than the options at other hostels.

I cancelled my New York trip, sadly, so I didn't have the opportunity to stay at the hostel. I know that the Continental is apparently newer, as in just opened last month...but then again $4 a night is 2/3 of an all-day subway pass...so your newfound hostel is probably not a bad idea.

I've stayed in a few hostels/hotels in NYC, but I mostly stay with friends. But here are a couple of links to places I've stayed that may work for you.
Chelsea Star Hotel: http://starhotelny.com/rates.php
This place is great. In Chelsea, literally a block or two from Penn Station and 10 blocks to the middle of Times Square. Very touristy area close to lots of shopping and the subway. And for $30-$35 a night, not too bad. It's just been renovated and the staff are very nice and helpful. No breakfast, but great bakeries nearby that are pretty cheap, especially by NY standards.
*Note: I hate the touristy area, but it does have a lot of shopping close by for your Christmas shopping. But, if you get on the ACE at Penn Station (blue line @ 34th & 8th) and head downtown 3 stops and get off on the West 4th stop, you'll be right in the middle of Greenwich Village where there are tons of great little shops and restaurants in which you'll have more of a real New Yorker experience.
Another one - which I haven't stayed in, but I almost booked it for some friends who were visiting - is Jazz on the Town-East Village. http://www.hostels.com/en/availabili...telNumber.4554
For $30-$40/night, this would be a great one if you really wanted to hang in a younger, funky atmosphere. The East Village is definitely one of my favorite areas and has a very hip young urban college crowd. Downside? It's a long haul up to the more touristy areas of Times Square, Rockafeller Plaza, Broadway, etc.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!
