I didn't plan it this way but discovered that I will be in Rome on Easter Sunday (and Easter Monday, what's that about?). has anyone done this? Is anyone going to be there? I'm totally thinking of going to the Vatican on easter sunday, but not sure how early I should get there (probably like 2 days...)

So Rome, Easter... please share your stories with me :-)

I've not done Easter, but did Christmas and New Years for the Jubille (99/00). It was well worth attending some of the celebrations at the Vatican - and I am not Religious. Tickets were free to all the events, but had to get in line to get them.

Sweet!! I was in Spain during Semana Santa (and Avignon during Easter itself)... whatever you do, please learn from my mistake and make sure you have a confirmed place to stay. First of all you'll be dealing with all of Continental Europe's school holidays, and second of all you'll be in freaking ROME during freaking EASTER.

Oh, and another thing I learned-- it's not just Easter Sunday, it's also Easter Monday.

We were intending to go to Rome for Easter this year, but instead are going to Naples, and checking out Rome later in the week. Accommodations were one big factor in the decision (we need room for 6, so a little harder to come by than ones or twos), but probably the decider was that, due to the holiday, none of the Vatican Museums (including the Sistine Chapel) would be open. That and standing out in St. Peter's Square (if we were lucky) for four - five - six hours on Easter Sunday would have been awesome for us, but a bit tough on our four little guys.

Definitely, if you want to go to Mass, go early. It starts at 10:30, and the Easter blessing is at 12:00, so we were planning on going around 7:30, but even then, I'm sure we'd be way at the back down some side street. Remember too, that this is Pope Benedict's first Easter service and falls just two weeks after the anniversary of Pope John Paul's death, so it could be particularly busy with pilgrims this year.

All you hard working Americans are deprived of a holiday that Canadians and Europeans, among others, have been enjoying for years. "Easter Monday". I'd revolt, if I were you...

We're going to stay there with friends next week. Haven't heard anything about any troubles, other than the usual - crazy drivers, pick pockets, etc. Maybe someone was suggesting it would HELP if they imposed martial law...

France did impose curfews and what not during the rioting a few months back, now with all that's going on, who knows what they'll do. Maybe that's what you were hearing?

Can't say that I'm speaking from personal experience, but I've heard that during Easter Mass they drop one ton of rose petals through the opening in the roof of the Pantheon.
