Hey All. This is such an awesome site. I've been reading through ever since I graduated college and decided it had been far to long since I crossed borders. Anyhoo, I'm itching to get away from everyone and everything familiar and shall be spending 10 days in Italy (way too short a time, but all I can afford for now).

My basic itinerary is...Leaving the US Feb. 2, 2006 and getting into Rome on the 3rd.

Rome for 3-4 nights
Florence for 2-3 nights
Venice for 2 nights

(any major criticisms here?)

Then I leave Venice on the 11th and fly back here to home sweet Colorado, to begin pining about my next vacation.

Ok. I've got my backpack...starting to gather ye ol' necessities...
2 questions at this point.

1. Is there anything in those cities that I absolutely cannot miss? Aside from the obvious big tourist attractions..what are those secret places that are a must see, away from the crowds? I know its going to be hard packing so much into so few days, but I'm gonna do my best

2. Winter travel...are there any huge differences aside from necessary warm and woolly clothing needed? Are hostels and such going to be more open, so I might not have to worry as much about booking ahead of time? I heard somewhere that Italian food actually gets better in winter...

Thanks so much for all the help. Anytime work gets rough I just tell myself I've got less than two months before the bon voyage. Gives me hope.

Hi Josh - welcome tot he boards! I've only heard good things about those cities, but have no personally been there in Italy (went to Torino). I hear a lot of good things about Cinque Terre, so you may want to consider that if you have time. Anyhow, it looks like you allotted enough time for each city. Good job!! Obviously, peak time is summer, so hostels won't be as crowded during the winter. I know in some places (Poland for example), some hostels close over the winter, so you may still want to search online for places that are open year round. Don't know if you'll have any issues with that in Italy though, but never hurts to check.
