Cool

WOW. That's awesome. I bought my ticket and I am leaving on Jan 11 for 85 days in S. America starting in Brazil. I am stoked. Glaciers are on the list! I am very excited and can't wait to go. This will be my first solo too!

I am also looking to meet up with folks along the way if anyone will be in the area PM me and I will see if it will work!

That's great!!! just make sure you wear sunblock!!! And if you're going north you should use bug repellant (but you can buy that in Buenos Aires and it'll be cheaper, besides u dont need to carry it around in your long jurney - you'll find most brands you'd see in Europe and USA.

HAVE THE BEST TIME EVER!!! AND IF U NEED ANY ADVISE ELSE AS TO WHAT TO SEE, WHERE TO GO, ASK AWAY!!!

OK so now that I have my plane tickets and my guide book I am trying to plan a route through South America. After digging around I think it will be best to head south from Sao Paulo, Brazil into Paraguay and Argentina to Patagonia then back up thru Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Amazon River, and evnentually back to Sao Paulo for my flight out. I have 85 days to work with so now I gotta figure out where all I want to go and try to estimate how long to stay in each so I don't miss anything.

I am definately hitting all the big cities and touristy places as well as some smaller less traveled places. I am going to sit down and list out all the places I want to go and try to arrange it in the travel direction. Then I will estimate days.

Now time for questions.

It looks like I will need an HI card since most hostels down there are part of it. (10% off can add up over 85 days!). If not I only waste $30 usd so I will risk it. Any thoughts?

Anyone know what the "cheap" airlines are in S. America? I might have to take some flights and it would be good to know before hand. I will most likely fly from Manaus to Rio or Sao Paulo if in a time crunch.

Are there any reasons I should head north then south for my proposed trail?

Anyone know where I can get a map of the "Gringo Trail" online for free? I want to see what it looks like so I can find efficient routes between some of my stops.

Anything else I haven't thought of?

Thanks guys!

Foo

I am finally getting a route together and estimating some time. I start in Sao Paulo for a couple days to get over jetlag and explore then onto Rio for 9 days. Next is Iguassu Falls and into Buenoa Aires. I will cut Buenos Aires in half to see Montevideo. It looks like I will make it to Patagonia! I will spend a couple days at the glacier and then back to BA to head over to Mendoza then onto Santiago Chile. That is about as far as I got in my planned path. The days aren't set in stone but I have to at least have a path because the bus rides are LONG. I still have so much to do!

Anyone have experience with the overnight buses? I am not expecting to get good sleep if any but some personal stories would be good to hear!

No one has responded to my questions above so I assume that no one knows.

I actually found that too. For some reason I thought that was only part of it. If that is the actual trail then I must be mistaken. Thanks Omi!

That map is helpful for that leg.

Well, personally I've traveled from Río Gallegos (Santa Cruz) to Comodoro Rivadavia (Chubut) an from there to Bariloche. All were done thru the night and I had absolutely no problem!! (but then I can sleep in just about anywere). I didnt have any fancy tickets or anything... the only down side was that in Comodoro I had to wait like 10 hours before my bus would leave to Bariloche, it was a Sunday and everythis was closed!! so i just walked around the cuty, bought myself some lunch and croisants for tea time and in the mean while i met an English girl and a scottish guy. We had a pretty good time and wound up having dinner together at an all u can eat restaurant - that was my first long solo trip ever!!!

The trip from Bariloche to Buenos Aires takes 24 hours.. but it was fine, besides the bus made enough stops to stretch our legs and buy things to eat... it was okay AND SOOOO WORTH IT!!
