Hi , Just new to this site ,
i leave august 6th to travel to the states had plans but they fell through so ive decided to travel solo around what the heck right m not going to let others destroy my trip b4 ive started .... first time backpacking any body got any hints of places that should be a must go ? i arrive in atlanta and thinking of travelling texas but would like to see more than that ..... im there for a month , nerves are just kicking in lol

Hmmm, wild theme parks in the States. Florida has beautiful beaches/scuba diving/snorkeling. If you want to celebrity watch, LA would be cool. Beautiful hiking/sight seeing in the north west/west. Grand canyon, Las Vegas would be quite a trip (either). Great cheese/beer (WI!!). Our state capital and art/history museums (DC). The infamous New York (almost as spendy as London!). Nashville, TN for those Elvis fans. So much really, just depending on what you're looking for. Unfortunately, most transportation isn't as cheap as in Europe, so if you only have a month and are on a limited budget, staying south wouldn't be a bad idea.

Vegas is definitely a must do. If I were having friends from not america visiting me I'd take them there right off. Its a celebration of all that is seedy and cheesy and glitzy and inherently american. Plus you cant beat free drinks in the casinos...

Kit, best of luck~! My appreciation of the wonder that is America has been reinforced in the past year when I've been living in Canada...so no matter where you go, I'm sure you'll find some fun things to do. I might be traveling myself in the US (for work purposes) from mid-August until at least October, so if you get the chance, post where you decide to travel. There are T-Punks everywhere, and paths that cross always provide entertainment!

If your going to tour the south of the united states you can't miss Graceland.. It is in Memphis, Tenn.. It is crazy to see how the king lived... then there is the smokey mountains !!!. you also should check out Georgia, it is a really nice state.. Ive never been there, but i know parts of the Appalatian Trail are kick ass ... I don't know about Tejas. there are some rela nice places there but you in between there is a whole lot of nothing.. If you go way south there are some caves and and there is always Padre Island and Galveston, TX... Houston is righht next ot New ORleans.. you can take swamp tours from there.. there is nothing as cool as a mangrove swamp with the gators swimming around your skiff... catfish and cornbread uh huh!!!

If you're sticking with the south, I'll second the nomination of Louisiana... simply a great place. New Orleans is in a class by itself.

And Tennessee gets my vote for the friendliest people in America, although I'd probably have to shoot myself if I were exposed to music out of Nashville for a prolonged period

Omi, I both loved and hated your statement

Tennessee IS pretty much my favorite state...you're completely correct when you say the people are just amazingly friendly

Now...as for the music comment...it's clear you don't have too much exposure to the music scene in Nashville...which is understandable, because I'm guessing you avoided it due to fears of music.

There's a lot of other music that comes out of Nashville, believe me. You can live a life there where you wouldn't hear ANY country music, other than the normal places you might hear it now (the grocery store, etc)...
May I suggest:
thaxton ward - if you like rock, you NEED to check out this band!
xander - i don't know what genre to put this guy's music in. one song in particular, drive, helped me get over a very significant relationship. my roommate freshman year introduced me to this guy's music. unfortunately, xander died last year in a car wreck.
treva - if you like the folksy, acoustic gal-singer stuff.
blaze - from st. louis, but making big waves in the nashville rap/hip-hop scene...
sweet t - kinda in the same vein as DMB or O.A.R...an eclectic rock/jam band.

I am just always trying to combat the notion that Nashville is nothing but country...sure, we (and I use that term loosely since I don't live there anymore, but plan to again) play it up for the tourists, but in reality, there's a lot of good other music comin' out of a great city.

Glad you liked it...it's a really shame that young man died...now the world will be deprived of his further talents.

Don't get me wrong, there's plenty of country in Nashville if that's what you want. Just a lot of people have misconceptions that Nashville is ONLY country...totally incorrect.
If you DO head to TN, let me know...I can make lists of suggestions, especially for Nashville. Cheers!

OK, so here goes. There are actually NO "hostels" within the city of Nashville, TN.
I'm not sure of what method you'll be traveling by, so I'll offer a couple suggestions.
There is the River Retreat Hostel which is in Charlotte, TN about 35 miles west of Nashville. A single is $25 per night, a 4-bed mixed dorm is $18 per night. Remember to book using T-punk (which is the link I used)!

If you'd like to stay in the city, I have done some research and found the best value hotel I could...it is called the Crossland Economy Studios. It is on Murfreesboro Road, on the east side of the city. With the coupon you find here, the cost is only $28.99 plus tax for one night. It is convenient to the Nashville MTA, the public transportation service.

There's also the Best Western Music Row. According to the booking site via travelpunk, it is $21.66 per night in a 3-bed private ensuite. I'm not exactly sure how they operate it, but I'm guessing they want it to act like a hostel. Since this would be likely the cheapest way to get in a bed in Nashville, I have to say caveat emptor - buyer beware. There may be undesireable persons staying there.

Probably your best option, actually, is The CouchSurfing Project. There seems to be some very nice couples on the site who host visitors to Nashville. Check it out!

Now, as for things to do IN Nashville...

Well, there's plenty.

• Take in a songwriter show at the Bluebird Cafe (let me know when you're going and I can tell you if the shows during that time would be country or other types of music).
• If you like country music, go to a show of the Grand Ole Opry and also tour the Country Music Hall of Fame.
• Go shopping at Opry Mills Mall for some outlet deals & Green Hills Mall for some upscale boutiques.
• There's also shopping at the 12th Ave S area and Hillsboro Village.
• Walk around inside the Opryland Hotel, which has 9 acres of gardens inside the hotel in huge glass atriums.
• Visit Cheekwood Botanical Gardens, Percy Warner Park, and the Belle Meade Plantation.
• Tour the Belmont Mansion, and go see the Parthenon (a full-size replica of the Greek Parthenon).
• On the 13th, there is a NASCAR truck race, and there is various concerts going on throughout the month.
• There's also always the Nashville Titans football, and the Nashville Sounds minor-league baseball.
• If you are of drinking age in the US (21), walk on Broadway & Second Ave at night. That's where a big number of bars & clubs are.

Sassy, sorry I just now saw your topic. I live in Birmingham,AL. Your one of the only people I have ever heard say they want to visit the South, the South doesn't get much respect in the states. One thing about the south is that you will probably see more trees here then you have ever seen in your life. Alabama is a great place to visit, just PM me and give me some ideas on what you like to do and I may be able to come up with some ideas.
