So I am wanting to squeeze in as much as possible between 6 Dec (when I finish up exams here) and 11 January (when my spring semester program starts in Tokyo). At this point, I am thinking either Australia or New Zealand during that time.
That being said, I am a little sad at the thought of not being with my family on Christmas. Not that we do anything major, but still, it's Christmas.....I have friends in various places in Australia so I am sure I wouldn't be completely alone and probably someone would invite me to be with their family that day so I probably wouldn't just be in a hostel, but I think it will still be hard for me. But since I want to live abroad I should just get used it, right?
Alright, so who all has been ALONE in a foreign country during the holidays with no definite plans and how did you deal with it/what did you do?

I've spent several christmases alone over the past 10 years. I was in Spain for one, so I took a trip to Portugal and went camping (alone) in the mountains. Also spent one just touring around southern Italy. Kinda nice watching others celebrate and such.

I was in Paris on my 30th birthday with a friend of mine who, while a lovely person, wasn't a "close" friend at all. And EVERYONE except a childhood friend that I never see forgot my birthday-- no one sent an email or even remembered until I said something when I got home. Not even my freaking mother. But as a surprise Eva got up early that day, went to my favorite patisserie for a lovely apple tart and sang happy birthday to me. And then we proceeded to make our way through a bottle of Malibu rum, lol.
On the other hand I think it would be fun to spend a big holiday halfway around the world. My friends and I always have "orphan" Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners either right after or instead of the familly thing.
I'm thinking that I want to go somewhere else for New Year's Eve this year, since I've worked every single one for the last 7 years.

I spent last Christmas and New Years in Peru and I found it rather enjoyable. You get to see how an entirely different culutre celebrates holidays. After dinner and presents it seemed as if everyone went out to the bar. We had a blast.

My brother in law will be in Iraq for the holidays this year, so he gets to deal with that, along with leavin his wife behind in Germany. Her sister is coming over and they're going to do Christmas in Paris and New Years in Venice, so it'll still be exciting.

I'm leaving to go to Oz in Nov and I'll also be away for Christmas for the first time...I think my family's having a harder time with it than me, though.
I think it'll be great to experience a big holiday like this in an entirely different way. I'm not actually sure what to expect. I'll be in a hostel so I imagine that there'll be many others in the same boat.
Even though it's not gonna be the same as at home, it's new and exciting so I'm all for it. Although it's my fav holiday, it's really just another day on the calendar and it's my state of mind that'll make it great or not so great
Cheers,
Craig

That's so true! I know that even if I am kind of lonely that day and miss my family I probably won't be sitting on the beach thinking "Oh, I wish I was back in the US" And the unexpected is exciting....I am feeling much better about this. Bring it on!!!!!!!!!
