My first post...just found the site today at work while I was day dreaming of a trip and really appreciate all the information I'm getting.
Anyways I'm looking at heading out on approx a month long backpacking trip. Probably just by myself or one other. I've traveled alone before to several cities in the states, and enjoy the solo missio but have never been out of the continent (I live in western Canada).
The thing is I dont know how interested I am in the whole europe thing, especially when I can stretch my dollar so much futher in so many better climates. So I was wondering if some people could help out with some trip ideas that would interest a 23 yr old guy thats into the beaches, hostels, meeting people my age, and quite a bit of drinking. Oh....and I'm also a little unsure about some of the best times to hit areas....if someone could help on that????
Would really appreciate a hand, by stories or itinerary ideas etc. Thanks kids.
Peace.

There are millions of choice. Maybe Central America? Costa Rica perhaps? Most anywhere one goes they can find a party and good memories, depending on your outlook.
Not as pricey in that area as well, so you may be able to have that as an advantage as well. I haven't traveled to that area myself, I'm planning next year though.

I would route a bit more for South America, Peru is Beau, Colombia has killer stuff and Argentina has hot italian-like girls with blonde hair! Oh Brazil has awsome parties (I'm scared of brazilian "girl" cause I had a very bad experience with a trasvesti once (I Sooo totally didn't know!)) in my opinion go to South America as a first timer it never goes wrong for a first timer!!!

Hello and welcome to the boards fellow western Canadian.
For trying to choose where you want to go you could always try the "poke a stick at a map and go where the stick lands" technique... but i don't suggest it last time i tried that i got the city i live in. Honestly if your looking for somewhere to go, go with stuff that interests you. For example if you really like Indian food go to India, if you like water go to the Mediterranean. Ok these are really bad examples so I’m going to stop now. But as i said welcome to the boards and go talk to people who are coherent a.k.a not me when I’ve had all of two hours of sleep 17 hours ago.

If you're looking for places to strecth your dollar then you have South America India, Morocco, Thailand or Mexico that are all good tourism destinations.
I'm going to Europe regardless of the price to follow my bliss and be inspired.

How about having a trip round some islands in the south Pacific? You'll find it all in Fiji, the beaches, hostels, lots of people doing the same sort of thing. Plus, if you go to the right places, you'll find lots of drinking and partying going on. I'm sure you could probably spend a month in Fiji alone.
There's also the Cooks Islands, Samoa, Tonga, to name a few more.

Brazil is amazing. i am here now. Argentina is also nice and cheap. I have heard excellent things about Peru and Bolivia as well. Bolivia being the cheapest (and poorest) of them all. Mexico is cheap. Eastern Europe is still cheap as well. I have also heard great things about Costa Rica and Central America. Spanish definately helps down in these parts.
Your options are endless so I suggest picking 6 countries from different places, read about them, and decide on a region. For example: Mexico, Thailand, Brazil, Poland, Costa Rica, and Peru. You get the idea...

Thanks for some ideas....and yes the brush up on spanish I think is a must...whether it works or not its always a good ice breaker to hit on a girl and not make any sense.

North Africa- Morocco and or Egypt. Gorgeous countries, lots of history, lovely friendly people, and you can live like a king on nothing. Nothing. Not much of party countries though....
