Hey everyone,
Well, I'm leaving again this summer...this time I'm going to Cuernavaca, Mexico for a 3 month Spanish immersion program. Here's my question...should I be any MORE concerned/obviously wary on my own out there (and in Mexico City) than in other countries? I've done loads of solo travel though Eastern Europe and Italy and Paris, I lived in Dublin for a year, blah, blah. Basically, I have no fear of it, I've got plenty of street smarts. But tons of people are scaring me with horror stories about being a solo woman there that are pretty daunting. What do you think? Obviously, I'm going no matter what anyone says, but I'm just looking to get more opinions!
Thanks all.
Oh, also, any recommendations for me while I'm there? Gracias!
Jen

Central America is loaded with culture...if you get over to the south eastern side of the country you can check out the Mayan sites and some rainforests...

Oh btw, if I remember correctly you are from around Chicago...wanted to mention we are planning another meet-up (link ) I think that you had expressed intrest in the last one!

Cool! I did that when I was in college (Are you going to Cemenahuac by any chance?)
You'll get used to the Hissing/staring dudes and it's all good B) .
Cuernavaca is pretty nice and I was nervous about going to Mexico City alone but after the first trip I was addicted. It has it's rough parts and can be pretty scary but I never had any problems.
The only place I DID have a problem was Taxco which is also close to Cuernavaca and deffinatly worth visiting. But my handy pepper spray solved the problem of the horney phycho there and it's a beautiful and pleasant place otherwise.
Have Fun! I know I did.
(P.S. Flash Taco is lame )

This should go without saying, but be careful not to be alone late at night. I found myself at a bus stop alone one night (I was 19) because my friends left me with a guy at a club and I didn't want to go back to his hotel with him. While I was waiting for the bus, a horny local stopped his car and started pleasing himself in front of me... lucky for me the bus was coming, but who knows what else could have happened? I like the pepper spray idea too.
