I'll be traveling to Europe. My budget is around 2,000. These are the places I want to see: London, Englad; Edinbrough, Scotland; Paris, France; Amsterdam, Netherland; Rome, Italy; and Athens, Greek. Truthfully, I've been planning this for a month already, and I have nooooooooooooooo idea still. Can I add more destinations? Or do I need to take out a few? And for how many days I can I do this trip? Let's see, I'm female, I'll be traveling alone. I want a private room, just because I snore, but I also realize I can save more money going dorm-like. I'm towards the shy side. I want to experience the full culture. I want to do some touristic stuff. I also would like to eat at least in two resturants per place. How would I go about doing all this? Thanks.

privates rooms are a bit more expensive...so heads up there....

and about snoring...maybe give a heads up you do snore if you're in a dorm...just a heads up you probably will be woken up by other people...

Thank you! It'll be US dollars. Flight not inlcuded. And another thing, any advice on sites or what to do in those cities and the cheapest way to get around? Thanks a bunch.

PS. Oh, and I plan on staying there anywhere from two weeks to four weeks, depending on how my budget works out.

Ailyzon 10-17-2004 09:12 PM

Sorry... I also would like to add that I come from a VERY small city. So aside from being shy, I'm also non-confrontational, a bit uptight, anxious, and non-assertive. I figured this would bring out the best of me (hopefully), and perhaps some new self-discover, but at the same time I'm still a bit worried about the aspect of traveling alone, (very dependent on others). So, any other advice that would help me be a bit more worry-free would help. Thanks very much.

Youll have fun even though you think your shy and anxious, the new found freedom is the coolest thing!
There is heaps of snorers out there, you definitely wont be the only one...

PS I just got busted AGAIN last night for talking in my sleep...grrr how embarassing.

Since you say you are shy, I would recommend that you do stay in dorm rooms. Even if you're shy there's bound to be other people staying in your room that will introduce themselves or invite you out. One of the best things about traveling and staying in hostels is the people you meet. Staying in a room by yourself probably won't improve your shyness that much. I just got back from my first trip overseas and it was by myself and I loved the hostel life. Can't wait to go back.

Out of the places you're going to, I went to London, Edinburgh and Rome. I loved Edinburgh, definitely stay in the Castle Rock Hostel, great times there. Rome is pretty easy to get around if you don't know Italian so I'm sure you'll do fine there. And definitely let me know how Athens is. Greece is my next big trip.

Ailyzon, I come from a tiny town also (54 kids in my graduating class), so I know what you're talking about when you worry about it all being overwhelming. I think the trick is to embrace the feeling of being out of your element. Becoming comfortable with being in strange new places will probably help a lot with your shyness. The next thing you know you'll be a confident traveler. (disclaimer: I've never been to Europe, but it worked in south america)

Ailyzon, first welcome to the family you could not have found a better place and note that with TP you are never going to be alone!! If you start to feel alone and need someone to talk to when your in Europe they have computers all over and you always have your friends here!

Next I would try to stay in a dorm room more often than not...1 it is cheaper than staying in your own room and 2 like mpls said you will meet people that way. Even if you are shy there is always going to be someone who just comes up to you and starts talking and when you are traveling you will find out that fellow travelers can become instant friends.

Also doing something like this just goes to show that your are not as shy as you think you are.... most of the "shy" people that i know would never dream of doing something like this and sure as hell not on there alone!

So you are already on your way and you are going to be just fine! Any questions or concerns well that is what we are hear for.
Take care and have fun putting this all together that is half the fun!
Tecia ;)

Thanks guys! All this does make me feel better and braver. Would $2000 be enough for three to four weeks? I'm interested in going to London, Paris, Amsterdam, a big part of Paris, Greece.

skorch 11-29-2004 02:38 PM

As a fellow snorer (I got kicked out of a hostel in Budapest in the middle of the night for snoring) I feel your pain. Invest in a package of ear plugs and let your fellow travelers know before hand.

$2000 isn't going to get you very far in places like London and Paris. Expect to pay $30/night for a dorm room and $10 for a drink in London or Paris. In cheaper countries ( the further east/south you go, the cheaper things get), you can get away with spending $30/day for accommodation and food.. and in some places that will even cover your drinks!

When you get to a hostel, chat some people up and you'll find that there are often people heading in the same direction as you are. The best times I had were traveling with others I met and the worst times I had were traveling on the train all alone.

The best thing about traveling by youself is that you get to pick and chose who you travel with. If you are getting sick of someone, well just go somewhere else. If you meet some awesome people, alter your plans to coincide with their plans.

i just saw a commercial for like....this strip and you put it over your nose when you sleep and it makes it so you don't snore....that could be useful...

Somnambulation 11-29-2004 11:48 PM

I wouldnt begrudge a snorer. If you are staying in a dorm, youve got to go in expecting that.

bellelass 11-30-2004 10:20 AM

Jake snores.

Somnambulation 11-30-2004 05:13 PM

Thats what people have said. Im pretty sre they were all lying though.

bellelass 12-01-2004 10:15 AM

thats alright, I talk sometimes.

urOZm8 12-03-2004 05:51 AM

I shared with Jake and didnt hear him snore.

PS we were in San Sebastion and Madrid and partied like there was no tomorrow. Maybe I just passed out and didnt hear the snoring

bellelass 12-03-2004 10:04 AM

I'm really being quite hypocritical here myself... but you must have passed out...

:kisscheek:

Somnambulation 12-03-2004 05:27 PM

See I knew people were lying, thanks Evan. If you didnt hear it, it didnt happen. Kind of like if a tree falls in the woods...

Hi Aliyzon, I live in England and have been to London loads (6 times i think). I dont know what your into Art ?,History ?, or something inbetween ?. My favourite places to visit would have to be...

1- The London Eye (biggest ferris wheel in world where you can see all of London)
2- Buckingham Palace.
3- Shakespears Globe Theatre.
4- Tate Modern Art Gallery.
5- Tower Of London.

The only downside is that they are all pretty expensive.
