Well if i were going to amsterdam, here is what I would do...
I would stay at the flying pig (making sure to book ahead....way ahead) and i would make a real effort to see the van gogh museum and the brewery. i'd love to go there, my ex spent a week there and says it is absolutely great.

Yep, The Flying Pig is the party place for backpackers! Even if you canīt find a booking for a hostel bed during that time, you can still hang out in the lounge/bar at night.
The Anne Frank museum/house is a must see also. Even if you canīt appreciate it now, you will some day (I hope). Just walking through the house, the bookcase/secret door, the bedroom, etc...really gives you the chills.
Back to partying, hereīs a link with clubbing info in Amsterdam - Cityvox

Be wary at night in and around the red light district, or anywhere for that matter, Although very calm and enjoyable by day, it can get a little rough at night with drug dealers & rough necks hanging about. I almost ran into a problem there, but just my luck, 2 police officers came around the corner....
I must clarify, when I say "at night" I mean after like 1 or 2am. There are alot of tourists and residents around, even at that time, but just do not wonder off into side streets or alleyways, and just know your surroundings. Its a grand city!!! And I was not afraid to tour around at night, I loved it. Just something to think aboot. ( That "ABOOT" is for all my American Bro's/Sis's)
I fell asleep in front of Anne Franks house when I was there I never actually went in, but the tourists looked at my sloopy self with some pitty LOLOLOLOL...That offends some people, but heh, what the hell !!!!!!!
Just Another Life Experience!!!!!

:D hahaha...made it all the way to the front, but didnīt go inside! Awww...sooo close, but no cigar. Well, itīs definitely easy to get caught up in the swing of things in A-dam.
Youīre right CD, some parts of the Red light district are a bit seedy and they do have that danger element to them. Choose your path or alley way, carefully, if youīre out late at night. There are parts in Duke Snyders story that talk about Amsterdam. Read with caution
I had one of them "brownies" but it didnīt do anything for me, if ya know what I mean . My first time too...shucks <_< !

I've been to Amsterdam several times and have never had a problem--even while tripping balls on hawaiian mushrooms and talking to the street dealers. most of the guys hawking their wares(read extasy, acid, and cocaine)on the streets in the redlight district are nice guys. just tell em your not interested and away they go. if they don't go away go away yourself. as for fun: favorite coffeeshop is the blue bird(best selection in town) although the free adam coffeeshop also sells beer, favorite hostel is the bulldog (its so close to the redlight). as for clubs there are plenty of great ones, just ask at the coffeeshops and the hostel for whats good that night--I had a blast at the student club by the dampkring. definitely go to the van gogh museum, the sex museum, the erotic museum, the torture museum and see the live sex shows in the redlight, at the bananen bar a "lady" will sign a postcard for you with her . . .uh-hum. just remember go upstairs for the better looking enetertainment.

Great play by play headhunter, i guess you would have lots of ecperience being there that many times, i on the other hand have only been once. I didn't have anything bad happen to me either, I had a blast, and went to most of the sights you mentioned. As for the "street" dealers, just becareful, not all drugs are legal, and when you go to a street dealer your taking a chance at a run in with the law. I would say, get what you need at the coffee shop.
