well, one of our most informed members on costa rica is out of the country now: i hope this isn't too presumptuous, but you should pm her: diorama - i bet she'd be glad to answer your more specific questions... other than that - i would say pick up a phrase book and make some flashcards or something - whatever works, but you should try and learn a little spanish before you go... life will be much easier then!

Goodguinness....Guinness is always great...Anyways, Just got back from Costa Rica, and you won't regret going there. One of the cool things about Costa Rica is that most everyone speaks some English there. It seems that its now part of the educational system there and you'll always find someone to communicate with, especially in San Jose. San Jose...it's cool, but, for Latin America, not so great, a bit boring actuslly. If you can get out to the jungle, to one of the volcanos, now there's something. I spent half my time at Arenal, this volcano in the jungle, doing a job...you could hear the volcano breathing! The other half was at Playa de Coco, little beach town in Guanacaste that is just chill and layed back and offers some great diving and surfing. If you make it out there and want to go diving, go see Rich Coast Diving...Jessica is the owner, originally from Chi-town, and she just has the greatest crew running out of her shop.

Anywyas, if yo have any questions, give me a shout and I'll try to point you in the right direction. Good luck on the trip!

Welcome to the boards GoodGuinness!!!

Have not been to Costa Rica... but I'm Asian too, speak some Spanish, I wouldn't worry too much though, Latin Americans are very open and friendly in general, perhaps it has to do with the tropical climate. Yes, do learn the basics in language, do take a phrase book, but I'm sure you're in for the experience of a lifetime. I've only heard good things about Costa Rica!!!
