So I have a 5-week trip to Europe planned for the end of March. The first week and a half/two weeks are going to be spent mostly with a family friend of mine in Birmingham, England, and I'll be able to wander around alone here & there.

But then I'm going to "the continent" for the rest of the time, supposedly alone... but somehow I've been roped into a friend who lives in Germany coming along with me for at least two weeks, then visiting another friend in Bordeaux and then visiting *another* friend in Bratislava. (I'm not going to be staying with these friends, which may help.) After that I'll be heading to Prague for a few days, and that most likely will be my "alone" time.

I was really looking forward to wandering around, doing whatever I want whenever I want. Don't get me wrong, I really want to see my friends, and it'll be nice to have some built-in drinking buddies. But I like my alone time and I'm thinking that I may not get as much of it as I was hoping.

Any thoughts?

Talking

Make no firm commitments. Travelling and dated checkpoints just don't mix very well. They are being friendly by offering to meet up, as you are by accepting. Fine, but be sure to let them know upfront that your schedule may be very unpredictable and flexible, so no guarantees...

thanks, voyd... I think that's pretty much what I'm going to do. And I have yet ANOTHER friend in Cairo who wants me to come visit her, but that's a little more than I can afford, not matter how much I would love to go. sigh. How on earth did 5 weeks suddenly turn out to be not enough freaking time?

hey sv! it's nice that you have a lot of friends who want your company, that is flattering, and it speaks well of you. when i was traveling, i really wanted to do it alone, but didn't mind seeing some 'good' friends again. basically, we agreed to keep in touch via email regarding our whereabouts. and if we happened to be at the same place at the same time, great! we might have spent part of or a day together or met for a meal or drinks at night, otherwise, we just exchanged travel info. and moved on. i guess we respected the fact that our personal journeys was important for each of us.

Yeah, I agree with the above professionals This is your time, sv. If you really want to be alone to wander off as you please, it's not too late to alter your plans.
How about splitting up with your friend from Germany, halfway into it so you both have time to wander alone, then meeting back up for a couple of days before heading out to Bordeaux?

I am looking forward to seeing my friends. But what I thought would be maybe a week with one friend is turning in to two because she kinda sorta invited herself along. I really did want her to come with me for some of the time but I just didn't realize exactly *how* much time that was going to be. Ah well. I think I'm going to nix the trip to Bordeaux.
