What is the max you will pay for a flight to London? Do you suggest one airport over another?

I always try to keep it under $275 or $300. But that's because there's a direct flight from Raleigh to London that's really cheap w/ an ISIC card if you book far enough in advance.

it kind of depends when you go since prices shoot up so much in the high season. the most i've paid is 620usd (after taxes) for a ticket on BA. i'm kind of spoiled in that 3 airlines fly direct to london (virgin, ba and american) from boston and 2 (icelandic and aer lingus) have cheap connecting flights so it keeps prices down.

in terms of airports, i've only flown into heathrow but i've heard gatwick is just as good. standstead and luton do more low cost european travel so i doubt you'll encounter those unless flying within europe.

oh, and also british airways in running a sale for spring flights to london so i would check out there website. i think you have to fly midweek both ways so hopefully that isn't a problem.

I've never paid more than $600 for a non-stop from the west coast (BA & Virgin). Typically it averages around the $400 mark when the gettin's good, but I'm pretty nuts about hunting down the fare and going then, instead of when it fits my schedule.

I guess I've been assuming I would fly into London, are there other EU airports which run good deals that I should keep my eye on?

I know, I'm the girl with a million effin' questions these days.

The big hubs are London and Amsterdam, so they will most likely have the best fares from the USA.

Also try Dublin. Ireland has low taxes on international flights. I'm paying $600 from Chicago, but depending on time of year and which city you're flying from it easily goes down.

I just bought a flight to London Heathrow with British Airways from San Francisco. After extensive search, they were still the cheapest with a nonstop flight at perfect travelling hours of the day. There were a couple of cheap internet rates that were mabye 30-40 dollars cheaper but they had you making all kinds of connections with long stopovers, leaving at like 4 in the morning. British Air is very comfortable too, unlimited drinks and snacks plus movies and TV to watch the whole flight. They really seem to be the best bet, at least from the west coast.

I'm still trying to get a feel for how I can best save money while globe trotting.. The more I get to thinking about my options, the more my plans change! I mean....at this point, the whole world is my play ground!!
I keep thinking that realistically....I COULD travel for a year, maybe a year and a half. Of course I will need to limit my time in Europe and travel in more affordable areas...

So....I think I'm looking for a one-way to Europe around August or September (if I will save a couple hundred bucks on airfare)....I am planning to stay for 3+ months....

Any ideas on how I should better structure my thoughts, planning?

I really appreciate all the info you guys are so willing to give.

I'm also shopping around for good deals on airfare to London. So far, it looks like $600 to $650 on expeidia.com, flying june or july. has anyone done the "courrier" deal? You know, where you carry a package to your destinatin for a courrier company? Is it possible to arange this in advance? How reliable is it?
