Did a lot of research into it before we left. The gist: if you are flying from the New York/DC area and don't care where you end up and if you have to do standby for up to three days, possibly bouncing from airport to airport, it may be worth it. I was able to fly from Chicago to Dublin for $250 buying a regular ticket, no standby-esque and I knew for sure what date/time/airport I was leaving from. If you're still considering it, ask away.
Edited to note: I reread and realized you're going in July/August. While it will probably save you money (again, as long as you can bounce between major airports and don't care where in Europe you end up) you'll probably go through a lot of waiting to get on a plane with a seat.
