One thing I found was to look at flights that go to that destination and then sign up for the newsletters and check their promos/deals on their sites. Also, search for Taiwan Travel on yahoo or goole and visit some of those sites. They can sometimes point you in the direction of getting the cheapest flights.
As far as the airhitching thing: While it sounds super wonderful, it's really only beneficial if you live near a MAJOR airport, preferably on the east coast. Also, the price that you pay isn't really siginficantly better than just booking a ticket where you won't be flying standby. Also, you don't know where your destination (heading to Europe) will be, which can be cool, but might not be and you could be waiting for about 5 days for your ticket. If all that sounds kosher, I say go for it!
