I don't live in or near a major hub city like NYC or LA. How should I go about getting the best deal on my airfare? Should I book a domestic trip from my home city to NYC and then have a separate ticket on a cheap airline like Aer Lingus to Europe or should I let a travel agent handle it?

I am trying to plan around the dates June 14ish depart and August 16ish return.

Well... you'll be traveling during the single most expensive time of year to go to Europe, so I wouldn't hold out much hope that you're going to find something really cheap.

Instead of picking a major hub like NYC, what is the closest big city within, oh, a two or three-hour drive of you? I'd do that-- take a bus there or bribe a friend/parent into taking you. It'll be much easier and likely cheaper than paying for a second ticket to a different city in the US.
