If you're not picky about the airlines you fly on and what times you fly, then Priceline is great. Personally, I'm a pretty picky bastard about long-haul flights, so I wouldn't use them for overseas travel - but they're totally worthwhile for shorter domestic flights if you know what you're doing.

One caveat - be careful about allowing it to do "nearby" airports... Some of the airports aren't that nearby. You may end up booking a trip to Denver and wind up in Colorado Springs. Not cool.

There are a ton of web sites out there that have bidding strategies for Priceline and how to get what you want... I'd recommend studying them before putting out a bid on there, as the extreme tight-asses on there have figured out every way to get the most travel for the least money.

try Booking Buddy. you can search all the major sites that find cheap tickets all in one place...including priceline. i've found that orbitz is just as cheap, if not cheaper.

where are you flying? you can also try hotwire.com...they have different levels of "flexibility"

i.e., cheap = flight is anytime of day
good deal = flight in certain time windows (morning depart, evening arrival)

you don't know the name of the airline, but not a big deal - it'll be a major airline (united, american, etc.)

what i usually do is search everywhere else first and find the cheapest I can, then go on priceline and bid about $100 cheaper and see what it gives me - like Omi said though, that only works if things are flexible
