Hello all. This is my first post. I need some info on a topic I have not yet read about on this site....
I will be spending a few months backpacking Europe and I would like to travel east from their. Hopefully, through Russia and China to Japan. Can anyone give me some info on that sort of trip? I'd prefer to go by train. Anyone with some experience and/or knowledge?

I have never done the trip, but I have heard it is very difficult to find good transport through many of the locales. Not impossible, but difficult.
On a related topic, did you ever see that show on A&E called Long Way Round? It starred Ewan McGregor and his friend travelling around the world on motorcycle. They ran into some serious setbacks in Mongolia and Kazakstahn. Sounds like you'll have a blast, good luck!

The trans siberian railway will get you through Russia and into China, from China you'd either have to fly or take a boat to Japan, I imagine. Some friends of ours took the trans siberian about two years ago, breaking it up with a couple of stops...they had a blast.

Ah ha! I was trying to remember where I saw this post last night when I found a link for you.

There you go. I was thinking of doing the trans-sib eastward for a while, there are tour companies that you can go with- they have varying degrees of structure and take care of the major logistics for you (most importantly visas). Some are proper guided tours, but I had a friend who went westward on a tour that was really a "go as you please" sort of thing.
