Going to get my inter rail pass tomorrow, but I'm worried that I will have to pay hidden extras as it is only 2nd class. Are there a sufficient number of 2nd class trains around Europe? Any paticular points where there is only 1st class travel only?

Thanx for your help

Nervous Ash

Yes, there are definately enough 2nd class trains in Europe. Most of the local population uses it all the time. First class is simply for people who want to travel a bit more comfortably. It's noteworthy that a single train will usually have both 1st and 2nd class cars in it and they both will get to the same time! Of course there are exceptions to this rule and sometimes a train will get split into two parts - one goes one way and the other will get attached to a new train and go somewhere else. Just make sure you get on the right car - if in doubt, ask!

As for 'other' fees, simply remember that there are 2 things you can buy - a ticket (which gets you on the train) and a reservation (which buys you an actual seat once you're on that train). In most cases if it is not the height of the season and the trains are not overcrowded you'll be fine without a reservation. If you do buy a reservation you will have a piece of mind that you won't have to spend an 8hrs train ride standin in the aisle.

Also check out the Transportation thread for more info on train travel. Hope that helps!

Or for people over the age of 26 with a rail pass. If you're over 26 you HAVE TO (no exceptions) get first class, which sucks because the 2nd class passes are much cheaper. It doesn't stop anyone from actually sitting in 2nd class if they want, but hey, I'll take the bigger seat and less crowded train car. There are almost always far fewer people in first class, so one good thing is that you're more likely to get a seat on a busy train.

One thing you should know is that some trains require a reservation. The reservation fees are anywhere between 3 and 20 euros depending. For non-night trains, I paid average 3 to 6 euros. If you're taking a night train and want to sleep in a couchette, you'll pay approx 20 as a supplement.

Have a great time!!

I just watched "Rick Steves Europe" he talked about the Eurorail alot. gave some good tips, nothing I didnt already know from this site.

However, Rick Steve likes to go for the gold. Pay for first class everything. Maybe when I get back I will pitch a show for cheaper traveling? Student backpackers. Kinda pilot guides, only keep daily tabs on cash and how to make it last longer.

DONT STEAL MY IDEA!!!!!! :greenguy:
