You could try the Oz Experience bus. It is quite popular with backpackers. It's not just a bus line....it is kind of a tour bus as well.

thanks, i checked out that site, it sounds cool, but i couldn't tell if you can just like get on and over where ever you please or if its more like a tour. Its sounds like a cool idea though. does anybody know about taking the oz experience if its a tour or just a cool little bus that acts a little like a tour.

From what I gathered just by glancing at the site is that it is similar to the Busabout in Europe, just more complicated. There are certain locations that are overnight stops, meaning you must stop and then there are certain times that you can get on the bus... some one correct me if I'm wrong.

Overall the site is not very informative and difficult to navigate. You should call them for more info. Personally I would think twice about going with a company that can't provide me with all of the information that I need online...Prices???

good luck, let us know wht you decide.

virginblue.com.au
qantas.com

you can fly from Sydney-Cairns for US$75 on Jet Star also, which isn't too bad.
