Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on how to get from London Heathrow to downtown London? I'm assuming that the tube would be the most cost effective, but wasn't sure.

I believe you are correct, but I will check when I get home and post what my hostel forwarded me for directions if no1 gets back to thread before that. When are you going?

Yep - the tube's the most cost-effective. You can take the Picadilly (blue) line from the station below Heathrow to whatever station in London you need to make your transfer to. It'll probably take about 40-55 min.

If time is of the essence and you need to get to London Paddington quickly (i.e. in about 15 min.), you can pay around £15 for the Heathrow Express.

You could take a cab and go directly to your hostel or whatnot, but I've never found the idea of dropping £40 on a 30-min+. cab ride very palatable.

Is it pretty easy to get on the tube? I'm assuming I can wait to get my ticket there. Are there any tricks I should be aware of?

Yeah, just follow the signs to the Heathrow tube station after you pick up your luggage.

You can buy a ticket at the station - or if you plan on buying a Visitor Travelcard before you go, you can exchange your voucher at the travel office at the station. Keep in mind, though, that if you want a Travelcard that covers Heathrow, you'll have to get one for all zones, which costs a lot more than the one that covers central London only. I usually just buy the smaller Travelcard and pay separately to get to London proper.

How does the travelcard work? Is it for unlimited travel for a certain number of days, or what?

Yeah.. I believe you can get a 3-day, 4-day or 7-day, but don't quote me on that. Check em out here: Raileurope.com

They're a bit spendy, but when I'm in London, I use the shit out of the Underground every day, so I usually get one.
