If you were to buy a car in Australia how would you get insurance on the car??

I've been reading up on a few different backpacking stories in AUS and some people have bought cars as opposed to taking bus or whatever.

So whats the dilly yo?

If I was to buy a beater with a few other people and drive the thing into the ground, how would it work?

I wouldn't have a fixed residence, and it doesn't sound like the other people who had cars did either.

Road trip in Aus!!!

Pinion the cool thing in Australia is that you can drive a piece of shit around for as long as you like! You dont have to get it checked over every time you pay the registration (we say rego)

When you pay the rego you pay a compulsory 'third party insurance' This means if you crash into someone that insurance will pay for the damage to that person like their hospital bills (but paying for their car damage will be out of your pocket). Youll have to pay for your own car damage - but you wouldnt care - probably just leave the car for dead.

You may wanna look into 'road side assistance' if your car breaks down in the desert but.

Im not sure about the fixed address issue but.

Oh and when you transfer a car into your name you have to fit an authorised immobiliser. But at the transport office you can do a dodgy- as all you have to do is check the yes box to say you did fit one. Save yourself $90AUD

Hey pinion...

The whole no fixed address issue I dont know about. Always lived in Aus so always had a fixed address. When I have some time online Ill look into it for you.

One of my friends went to Oz last summer and got a car with a few other people.. I think they bought it.. Anyway they didnt have a fixed address and had a car.
