Hey All

I am looking to go somewhere this December and have two options. The one I am looking at first is to go to South America. The problem with this is that I can't find flights for under $850/$900 from Detroit (where I am) to some of the main cities (Santiago, Rio, Buenos Aires). Could anyone tell me what the cheapest cities to fly into would be. I would be looking to hit up Argentina, Chile, Peru, and Brazil. My other option is going to Europe as the prices for flights are quite cheap this time of year, but the weather is not too nice (nothing that I am not used to though). Any help?

Look at flights from Canada (Toronto)...start to call Canadian Travel Agents and get prices, and price beat each time...Flight Center which is popular here will price beat ANYONE even internet sites...

Go to varig and look for the internet bargains. I don't think they have flights that departure from Detroit, but the prices are quite good there.

I wouldn't recommend VARIG as they are VERY expensive and usually fully booked anyways, I don't know if it's too late for you but I got my ticket in MAy for Dec. 21st through January 5th and still paid U$870, so this sounds like average. Anyhow, check Delta Airlines and Continental, definitely the 2 cheapest airlines to fly to Brazil from US, Korean Air used to be the cheapest but we don't want them in South America anymore so they are gone.....

Skidrage, I actually found a flight on Varig from Miami to Brazil on DEC 31st for $430, it sucks that I am flying over New Years, but saving $1000 is well worth it!! It's probably going to cost me more to fly from Reno to Miami, than it is from the US to Brazil. Also something else you may want to try, is to fly to New York City or Miami (usually no more than $200) and fly out of there to South America. For me to fly from Reno to Brazil is about $1600, but a lot cheaper from Miami!
Jorgino, what part of Brazil are you going to? I plan on being there from Jan 1st until April 31st (unless immigration kicks me out sooner, or if I get bored). Maybe we can meet up and have a drink or twenty!

try http://www.mobissimo.com/travel/search_airfare.php

They search tons of websites all at once. The cheapest I found was to Sao Paolo, Brasil and it was $800, but that was probobly because of the dates I chose. I donno, give it a shot.

Thanks for the help again, but it looks as if my travel plans are going to be put on hold for the time being. I am pushing the Brazil plan to next summer, which should be cheaper since it is not high tourist season there.

hey Bahrainrocks, thanks for the invitation, I'm actually staying in the south part of Brazil, the capital of my state, it's called Curitiba, it's a nice little place, lots of things to see and do, including beaches, of course they're not as good as the ones in the northern part of Brazil, but that's where my family lives and that's where I'm staying. What places are you planning on visiting??

That's a good engine. But the cheapest base price I found on it from Waco (ACT) to Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) was $581. And from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) it's $418.

They still seem high because I pay less to fly to the EU and Asia - which are faar farther away. I mean, from TX I basically just have to fly right over and past Mexico to get there. It's really not that far, dammit! :greenguy:

I know you guys all hear about Rio and SP (Sao Paulo) but if you wanna get off the circle, there are literally thousands of places you can visit, BGirl please help me out here and add-on as you wish:

Bonito (Minhas Gerais) - amazing place, very beautiful
Pantanal (Mato Grosso) - lots of nature, animals, exotic place (not to be confused with the Amazon)
Florianopolis (the capital of Santa Catarina) - I compare it to SF, nice buildings, nice people, interesting night life.
Gramados (Rio Grande do Sul) - cousy place in the south
Salvador (Bahia) - beginning of Brazil, lots of history, beautiful buildings, touchy.
Rio - needless to say.....
Sao Paulo - Yuck! Folks I'd rather eat broccoli....
Fernando de Noronha - an island off of the northern part, the most beautiful place you will ever see in your life, activities include: swimming with dolphins, scuba diving, etc. etc. You need a government permit but I don't know all the details.
Fortaleza (Ceara) - I've never been there but I heard it's a very special place.
Sao Luis (Maranhao) - nice place too
Natal (Rio Grande DO NORTE) - they say it's a beautiful place.
Anyway, this is just a litte tiny suggestion.
