if you don't have much time flying would be best, you could try virginblue or jetstar both cheaper than greyhound on most trips

Hi from Oz,
A couple of tips...December and January are our peak season so you need to remember that this is when most Aussies have their annual holidays. It is a big country and from one popular well known tourist location to the next can mean a lot of miles (kms)
Trains (can be unreliable) Coaches are good for intercity travel but not that cheap compare to a cheap internet airfare (if you can get them in peak season - again need to plan ahead). You can get cheap round Australia coachtravel vouchers or check out your airline some will give you several stopovers within Australia.
Some hostel noticeboards will advertised people with cars going (north south etc) and wanting a passenger to share the costs.

Hello dttraveler,

I do not know what Australia is like today, but when I was there 40 years ago I hitchhiked everywhere I went and I never had a problem getting a lift.

I started out in Perth and hitched right across the Nullarbor Plain to Adelaide then went on to Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Mount Isa, Camooweal, Tennant Creek and up to Darwin.

Just make sure you have a good hat to keep the sun off of your head and a canteen full of water and you'll be just fine.
